What A Fair Credit Score Means For You:

How to get a perfect credit score

Borrowers within the fair credit score may push interest rates higher for their lines of credit. Borrowers in this range may incur higher charges associated with a loan or line of credit. It may be difficult to obtain a 30-year mortgage at the lower end of this range and you may expect higher interest rates. Auto loan APRs may have higher rates and credit cards may have lower limits and higher APRs.

Amidst bad economic news in 2020, there was a bright spot. Consumer credit scores increased by leaps and bounds thanks to a reduction in late payments and an aggressive effort to reduce credit card debt.

With reduced consumer spending, thousands of dollars in government stimulus funds, and smart tactics like loan consolidation and balance transfer cards, many people got a better handle on their debt.

But there may be change afoot for credit scores, too President Joe Biden has expressed interest in a public credit reporting agency that would take the place of credit bureaus like Experian, TransUnion, and Equifax. That would cause a huge shift in how we keep track of creditworthiness.

The Credit Score Needed To Buy A House

Your FICO score plays a major role in your ability to secure a mortgage. The type of mortgage that youre looking to secure will determine what your score should be. According to QuickenLoans, these are the following credit scores you need to work with lenders14:

How An Excellent Credit Score Can Help You

An excellent credit score can help you receive the best from lenders and give you a higher chance of being approved for credit cards and loans.

Many of the best cards require good or excellent credit. If you want to benefit from competitive rewards, annual statement credits, luxury travel perks, 0% APR periods and more, you’ll need at least a good credit score. And if you have an excellent credit score, you can maximize approval odds.

For instance, if you’re looking to earn generous rewards on groceries and dining out, the American Express® Gold Card offers cardholders the chance to earn 4X Membership Rewards® points when you dine at restaurants and shop at U.S. supermarkets but you’ll need good or excellent credit. Terms apply.

And if you want to finance new purchases or get out of debt with a balance transfer card, such as the Chase Freedom Unlimited®, you’ll also need good or excellent credit.

Take note that even if your credit score falls within the excellent range, it’s not a guarantee you’ll be approved for a credit card requiring excellent credit. Card issuers look at more factors than just your credit score, including income and monthly housing payments.

Keep Your Credit Utilization Rate Low

Both scoring models weigh this factor heavily. To determine your current utilization rate, begin by adding up the credit limits of all your credit cards.

Lets say you have two credit cards one with a limit of $2,000 and another with a limit of $3,000. This gives you $5,000 of total available credit.

Next, divide your current total balances by your available credit and multiply it by 100 to get the percentage. Imagine you have $1,000 in outstanding balances $1,000 divided by $5,000 is 0.20 so, in this example, your utilization rate would be 20%.

As you spend less of your available credit, your credit utilization rate goes down. In the above example, if you reduced your credit card spending to $500, your utilization rate would drop to 10%.

What credit utilization rate should you aim for? Using no more than 30% of your available credit is a great start.

What If Im Denied Credit Or Insurance Or Dont Get The Terms I Want

Questions About What Can Affect Your Credit Score

Under federal law, a creditors scoring system may not use certain characteristics for example, race, sex, marital status, national origin, or religion as factors when figuring out whether to give you credit. The law lets creditors use age, but any credit scoring system that includes age must give equal treatment to applicants who are older.

You have the right to:

Know whether your application was accepted or rejected within 30 days of filing a complete application.

Know why the creditor rejected your application. The creditor must

  • tell you the specific reason for the rejection or
  • that you are entitled to learn the reason if you ask within 60 days.

Learn the specific reason the lender offered you less favorable terms than you applied for, but only if you reject these terms. For example, if the lender offers you a smaller loan or a higher interest rate, and you dont accept the offer, you have the right to know why those terms were offered. Read to learn more.

If a business denies your application for credit or insurance because of information in your credit report, federal law says the business has to

  • give you a notice that includes, among other things, the name, address, and phone number of the credit bureau that supplied the information.
  • include your credit score in the notice if your credit score was a factor in the decision to deny you credit or to offer you terms less favorable than most other customers get.

If you get one of these notices:

Tip : Never Miss A Payment

If theres one thing you can control when it comes to credit building, its payment history. Payment history accounts for at least 35% of most credit scores. And you can avoid forgetting to pay your bill by setting up automatic monthly payments from a bank account. You just need to make sure theres enough cash available in the account every month to cover the payments.

With that in mind, its wise to contribute to an emergency fund on a monthly basis as well. With a solid stash of cash backing you up, you will be less susceptible to missing bill payments and incurring credit-score damage if youre ever met with a significant, unexpected emergency expense. Your goal should be to save about a years worth of take-home pay for this purpose, but even a few months pay will go a very long way.

Why Having A Good Credit Score Is Important

In general, having good credit can make achieving your financial and personal goals easier. It could be the difference between qualifying or being denied for an important loan, such as a home mortgage or car loan. And, it can directly impact how much you’ll have to pay in interest or fees if you’re approved.

For example, the difference between taking out a 30-year, fixed-rate $250,000 mortgage with a 670 FICO® Score and a 720 FICO® Score could be $72 a month. That’s extra money you could be putting toward your savings or other financial goals. Over the lifetime of the loan, having a good score could save you $26,071 in interest payments.

Additionally, credit scores can impact non-lending decisions, such as whether a landlord will agree to rent you an apartment.

Your credit reports can also impact you in other ways. Some employers may review your credit reports before making a hiring or promotion decision. And, in most states, insurance companies may use credit-based insurance scores to help determine your premiums for auto, home and life insurance.

Whats The Difference Between Base Fico Scores And Industry

Base FICO Scores, such as FICO Score 8, are designed to predict the likelihood of not paying as agreed in the future on any credit obligation, whether its a mortgage, credit card, student loan or other credit product.

Industry-specific FICO Scores incorporate the predictive power of base FICO Scores while also providing lenders a further-refined credit risk assessment tailored to the type of credit the consumer is seeking. For example, auto lenders and credit card issuers may use a FICO Auto Score or a FICO Bankcard Score, respectively, instead of base FICO Scores.

FICO Auto Scores and FICO Bankcard Scores have these aspects in common:

  • Many lenders may use these scores instead of the base FICO Score.
  • It is up to each lender to determine which credit score they will use and what other financial information they will consider in their credit review process.
  • The versions range from 250-900 and higher scores continue to equate to lower risk.

Why Does Your Credit Score Matter

Your credit score is kind of like a snapshot of how well youve been managing your debt. If you have a high credit score, lenders will assume that you are less of a risk of defaulting on a loan.

But if your score is low and you have a history of not paying your bills on time, lenders will see you as more of a risk. They may still be willing to lend to you, but youre going to pay a lot more in interest. A low credit score means youll end up paying more for things like your mortgage, personal loans, or auto loans.

A poor credit score can affect your life in other unexpected ways. The Society for Human Resource Management found that 47% of employers take credit scores into consideration when they are making hiring decisions.

And landlords may check your credit score before deciding whether or not to accept you as a tenant. So if your credit score falls in one of the lower ranges, its worth putting in the effort to raise your score.
