What Should Your Credit Score Be To Buy A Car

How Are Credit Scores Determined

Leasing vs Buying a Car. What is better for your credit score?

FICO scores are largely based on a persons payment history and outstanding balances. Other considerations include the length of their credit history, recently opened credit lines, and their credit mix:;how many credit cards they have and how much of that credit is being used, the number of retail accounts they have, their student loans, installment loans, etc.

In addition to the FICO score, a credit report will also note all open and closed credit sources, credit inquiries/applications made, and information on overdue debt, bankruptcies, or civil lawsuits. Lenders will further consider an applicants annual income to assess how large a monthly car payment they can afford.

Late or missed payments, debts that have gone to collection agencies, bankruptcies, exceeded credit limits, and outstanding tax liens all negatively affect FICO scores.

What Do Lenders Look For In A Credit Score

In short, lenders want to get paid. The dealership or the bank or credit union are trying to assess the likelihood that you will be able to pay them back. They do this by performing a risk assessment based on your credit history and your current finances, largely informed by your FICO credit score. This score is based on information from your credit report and your current monthly payment plan of any existing credit sources. Five main components comprise your credit score, each with a different associated weight.

Below 700 Be Prepared To Explain

If your score is below about 700, prepare for questions about negative items on your credit record and be able to document your;answers, says Mike Bradley, internet sales manager at Selman Chevrolet in Orange, California. Matt Jones of the automotive shopping site Edmunds.com says the number may be closer to 680.

Both men say theyve seen people get financing sometimes even top-tier financing with scores that are much lower.

Although its possible to get a loan with a low score, anything under 500 is a flashing red light, says Dave Cavano, who manages the car-buying service for Auto Club of Southern California.

That means you wont qualify for an attractive interest rate, but it doesnt mean you cant get a car.

What Does That Mean For You

In general, it means that although different lenders use different measures, people with exceptional credit scores may qualify for the lowest rates, while people with lower credit scores will often qualify only for loans with higher rates.

How You Can Make The Process Easiereven With A Low Score

Theres a difference between having a lower score because you dont have much credit history and having a low score because youve previously gone into bankruptcy or defaulted on a credit card. If you have a score lower than 700, your job is to document, document, document. You will particularly need to make the case that you make on-time paymentsand if you do this successfully, you might see your rates drop to that of those with a perfect credit score.

Be prepared to back up your claims with evidence: bring credit card statements, rent payment receipts, and anything else that shows you pay on time and in full. If you have a stable job and are able to put down at least 25% of the cars value into a down payment, this could also help you secure a lower rate.

If your credit score is below 500, these techniques probably wont work so well for you, though that doesnt mean that you shouldnt try, and you should be prepared for a higher interest rate.

If all else fails, it might be worth asking a relative or very close friend with stellar credit to co-sign your loan. If you do this, you might be able to secure a much better interest rate. Just be aware, though, that a failure on your part to make payments would mean that theyd be on the financial hook for the full amount of the loan.

How Is Your Credit Score Calculated

What Should Your Credit Score Be To Purchase A Car ...

Your payment history has the biggest impact on your credit score. It makes up for 35% of your score, followed closely by your credit utilization. The reason these two indicators are weighted so heavily is they give the clearest picture of your ability to pay back loans on time.

Other factors that determine your credit score include the duration of your history, the number of recent inquiries and the variety of accounts you have. A lengthy credit background shows an ability to manage financial obligations for extended periods of time, while multiple inquiries at once may hurt you. If your credit is a good mix of credit cards, mortgage and auto loans, you may be in a better position than if all of your debt stems from credit cards.

What Are Interest Rates Like For Each Credit Range

You have to separate loan rates for used cars and new cars because they vary greatly but here are some examples of what you can realistically expect:

18.33% 12.42%

Again, these numbers are just averages. For any credit rating you fall in, the interest rate youre offered may vary depending on what auto dealer you go to.

Keep Credit Card Accounts Open

Dont close old credit cards. If you have old credit cards that you arent using, its still a good idea to keep them. Closing old accounts can hurt your score by shortening your average account age and reducing your overall credit limit.

When youre ready to buy a car, deal with that first before you consider financing for anything else. Its also best to do your rate shopping relatively quickly so it doesnt look like youre applying for a bunch of new loans.

Remember, no matter how tempting it may be to go with a fancier car, you have to be able to afford your monthly payments. After all, being late or overdue will only hurt your credit score and your chances of better rates on future loans.

What Is Considered Good And Bad Credit

There is no definitive point scale where there is a clear and well-defined demarcation between credit ranges. What weve gathered below are simply trends in the credit industry.

What one industry considers to be a good credit score, may be considered excellent by one, but only fair by another. So take the following ranges with a grain of salt:

  • Excellent Credit 750-850
  • Poor Credit: 551-649
  • Bad Credit: 300-550

So now the question begs to be asked, what kind of score do car dealerships want? Here again, the answer is not quite as simple as you would probably like.

Auto lenders have access to their own FICO scoring report that predicts the likelihood that you would default on an auto loan. Not only is it separate from the other three credit bureaus, but the range is different as well .

So does this mean you shouldnt worry about what your credit scores are on the other reports?

Absolutely not. Much of the information is repeated throughout all reports, so an error on one is likely to be an error on another.

Check For Errors On Your Credit Report

WHAT IS A FICO SCORE? How to improve your credit score before you buy a house or car.

Its currently estimated that one in five Americans has an error on his or her credit report. Thats roughly 42 million people possibly suffering from bad credit who shouldnt be.

If you do see an error, dont delay. Begin acting immediately to get it corrected. Contact the agency by writing and dispute the error. If you can, provide any evidence to support your argument. Do not email or call. It needs to be done through writing.

After they receive your letter, they have thirty days to review your case. If they dont do so within this time frame, the item must be removed from your credit report. You should also receive an updated copy of your report and score. By getting negative items removed, it should improve your credit score.

While Theres No Universal Minimum Credit Score Required For A Car Loan Your Scores Can Significantly Affect Your Ability To Get Approved For A Loan And The Loan Terms

In the second quarter of 2020, people who got a new-car loan had average credit scores of 718 and those who got a used-car loan had average scores of 657, according to the Q2 2020 Experian State of the Automotive Finance Market report.

Lower credit scores could result in fewer offers and higher interest rates. But that doesnt necessarily mean you should throw in the towel if your scores arent where you want them to be.

Read on to learn more about how your credit scores affect your odds of getting a car loan and ways you can increase your chances of approval and potentially receive better offers.

What Is The Difference In Credit Scores

While the fundamentals behind consumer credit scoring models are similar, each credit scoring model uses specific criteria to analyze one of your credit reports and generate a credit score.

Sometimes there are small, but potentially important, differences. For example, one credit scoring model might ignore paid collections accounts while another might consider a collections account a negative item even if it’s been paid.

FICO® and VantageScore are the two market leaders in credit scoring, and the base scoring models they create also share some similarities.

Each model only looks at the information in one of your credit reports from Experian, Equifax or TransUnion to determine your score. A higher score is best because it indicates you are less likely to miss a loan payment.

The latest base models also have the same scoring range: 300 to 850. However, FICO® also has industry-specific scores, including scores for auto lenders, that range from 250 to 900.

Should You Worry About Your Credit Score When Buying a Car ...

It’s no secret that the overwhelming majority of auto lending decisions are based on FICO Scores. However, not as well understood is that most auto lenders pull FICO Auto Scores, an industry-specific version of the FICO Score tailored to be a better predictor of paying your auto loan on time. Similar to the broad-based FICO Scores, a history of paying as agreed, using available credit wisely, and only applying for credit when needed will typically result in a higher FICO Auto Score.
