Make A Plan For Your Money
As you rebuild your finances, youll want to have a budget. It provides much-needed visibility into your cash flow so you can build a plan that works for you. Be sure your plan allows you to pay all your bills in full. Making on-time, in-full payments is one of the most simple and effective ways to rebuild your credit.
If you have extra money left over in your budget after paying your bills and other necessities, try to save a bit from each paycheck. Saving is a top priority for many people in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. TransUnion Consumer Pulse research found that a third of consumers say its a lot more important to have savings today, compared to how they felt before the pandemic.
Use A Credit Builder Credit Card
If you’ve never borrowed money before, you might assume this means you have a good credit score. In fact, this is unlikely to be true.
That’s because when assessing your application, lenders look for evidence that you’ll be able to pay back what you borrow, so having no record of successful repayments can count against you.
Experian estimates 5.8 million people have a thin file in the UK. This means that credit reference agencies dont hold any information on you which makes you invisible to the financial system. This can lead to not being able to access products such as a mortgage, loan or credit card, or facing higher costs than others.
Consequently, you may find that you’re turned down for credit cards and loans especially those on the cheapest rates – even if you could comfortably afford to pay them back.
One solution is to take out a credit card specifically designed to help you build – or rebuild – your credit history.
However, as these ‘credit builder’ cards are aimed at higher-risk customers, APRs tend to be very high, so you should never use them to borrow.

What Affects Credit Score Update Timing
The timing of credit score updates is based on the timing of changes to your credit report. Since your credit score is calculated instantly using the information on your credit report at a given point in time, all it takes to raise your credit score is a positive change to your credit report information.
At the same time, having negative information added to your credit report can offset positive changes you might have seen to your credit score. For example, if you receive a credit limit increase but a late payment is also added to your credit report, you may not see your credit score improve. In fact, your credit score could fall.
Seriously negative information can weigh your credit score down, making it take longer to improve your credit score. For example, it can take longer to improve your credit score if you have a bankruptcy, debt collections, repossession, or foreclosure on your credit report.
The more recent negative information is, the more it will impact your credit score.

Limit Your Requests For New Creditand ‘hard’ Inquiries
There can be two types of inquiries into your credit history, often referred to as “hard” and “soft” inquiries. A typical soft inquiry might include you checking your own credit, giving a potential employer permission to check your credit, checks performed by financial institutions with which you already do business, and credit card companies that check your file to determine if they want to send you preapproved credit offers. Soft inquiries will not affect your credit score.
Hard inquiries, however, can affect your credit scoreadverselyfor anywhere from a few months to two years. Hard inquiries can include applications for a new credit card, a mortgage, an auto loan, or some other form of new credit. The occasional hard inquiry is unlikely to have much of an effect. But many of them in a short period of time can damage your credit score. Banks could take it to mean that you need money because you’re facing financial difficulties and are therefore a bigger risk. If you are trying to improve your credit score, avoid applying for new credit for a while.
Dispute Credit Report Errors
A mistake on one of your credit reports could be pulling down your score. Fixing it can help you quickly improve your credit.
You’re currently entitled to a free report every week from each of the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. Use AnnualCreditReport.com to request those reports and then check them for mistakes, such as payments marked late when you paid on time or negative information thats too old to be listed anymore.
Once you’ve identified them, dispute those errors to get them removed. The credit bureaus have 30 days to investigate and respond. Some companies offer to dispute errors and quickly improve your credit, but proceed with caution before you choose this option.

Consider Getting A Credit
If you have a poor credit history, you might want to think about getting a credit-builder credit card. These are cards designed for people who either have made little previous use of credit or who have a bad credit history. But credit limits on these cards are often low and the interest rates are high. This reflects the level of reassurance your credit file information provides to lenders.
Butbe aware that the interest rates charged are much higher than standard credit cards. Typically, youll be paying over 30% in interest a year, which is another reason to try to pay off any balance in full each month. Otherwise, you might end up in debt that you struggle to get out of, which could harm your credit rating even further.
Register To Vote Or It’s Much Harder To Get Credit
If you’re not on the electoral roll, it’s much harder to get accepted for credit, so sign up immediately. Don’t wait for the annual reminder or for the elections to roll around, apply at any time on Gov.uk.
Simply follow the instructions online it’ll ask you a series of questions aimed at identifying you, and the local electoral borough you need to register with. Note that you’ll need your national insurance number to hand.
Many worry some councils sell on the data. But you can opt out of the open electoral register which can be used for marketing.
Credit reference agencies are allowed to use the full register which you can’t opt out of and that you should, by law, be on. The electoral roll can be a factor in scoring, but even where it isn’t, not being on it can lead to delays as lenders also use it to check your address and ID.
It’s worth noting the credit scores sold to you by credit reference agencies may show you’ve a perfect score without being on the electoral roll. Don’t let that fool you into thinking not being registered won’t affect your ability to get credit. It will, because lenders also need to be sure you are who you say you are.

Address Any Errors In Your Credit Report
If you do not owe the money, you should send a letter to ask the company to prove you owe the money. The good news is, you do not have to read books on federal law all you have to do is ask. Call up collection agencies to try and get a settlement on the collection. You can also assure them that you will pay off the money you owe if they will remove the collection from the credit report. Also, try to get any late payment notices removed as well.

Consider Consolidating Your Debts
If you have a number of outstanding debts, it could be to your advantage to take out a debt consolidation loan from a bank or credit union and pay them all off. Then you’ll just have one payment to deal with and, if you’re able to get a lower interest rate on the loan, you’ll be in a position to pay down your debt faster. That can improve your credit utilization ratio and, in turn, your credit score.
A similar tactic is to consolidate multiple credit card balances by paying them off with a balance transfer credit card. Such cards often have a promotional period during which they charge 0% interest on your balance. But beware of balance transfer fees, which can cost you 35% of the amount of your transfer.
How To Raise Credit Score By 200 Points
A few points on your credit score can mean the difference between getting approved for a loan at a reasonable interest rate and being denied a loan altogether. If your credit score is currently under the 600-mark, its time to take some steps to give it a boost. Here are some ways you can effectively raise your credit score by 200 points:
Dont use more than 30% of your credit card limit Just because your company allows you to spend a certain amount of money on your credit card doesnt mean you should max out your card every month. To get your credit score up, keep your credit card spending to no more than 30% of your credit limit. Doing so will increase your score as you pay your card on time every month.
Settle old debt Creditors are sometimes willing to negotiate with borrowers to eliminate certain negative items from their credit in order to receive payment. You may be able to do this with your creditors it doesnt hurt to ask. Settling your old debt can do wonders for your credit score and will even help you avoid any issues in the future.

Can I Borrow Money With A Poor Credit Rating
If your credit score is holding you back, you may want to think about taking proactive steps to repair it, and consider waiting until your credit report has improved before applying for new credit cards or loans. If you have a poor credit rating, having a loan application declined could potentially harm your score further.
There could still be options for you, however, if you need a little extra cash flow and want to get a credit card or loan while your credit score is low, as long as youre prepared to show that you can meet the conditions of a particular loan or card.
Doing your research including on fees, interest rates, contract terms and the risks that apply is important to help you decide if a credit or loan product is right for you. There are some programs, such as the Australian Government-supported No Interest Loan Scheme and Household Relief Loans that you may be eligible for if you are struggling financially.
At the time of writing, the Federal Government is planning to reform responsible lending laws in Australia to reduce the cost and time it takes consumers and businesses to access credit. The changes, announced in the governments economy recovery plan, have been widely criticised by consumer groups.

How Late Your Payment Is Matters
Another thing to keep in mind, according to Equifax:
In general, though, the longer a bill goes unpaid, the more damaging the effect it has on your credit score. For example, all other things being equal, a payment that is 90 days late can have a more significant negative impact on your credit score than a payment that is 30 days late. In addition, the more recent the late payment, the more negative of an impact it could have.
If you have a missed or late payment, dont give up and let poor credit become bad credit. Making that payment sooner can prevent more damage to your good credit history.
If you have a history of missed payments, there is hope – your credit score can still recover. It just takes time, though perhaps more time than you’d like. The good news is you can take steps today that could help you achieve a good credit score moving forward.
