How Does The Target Redcard Compare To Other Credit Cards

TARGET CREDIT CARD HACK: Expert Discusses Risk

While the REDcard has plenty of features to like, there are a few reasons you might think twice about getting this card. This card doesn’t come with a sign-up bonus, has a considerably high purchase APR and offers only Target benefits. With that in mind, we’ve highlighted a few other rewards cards you may want to consider instead.

Take Advantage Of Extended Returns

If you buy an item at a Target store or online using your REDcard, you’ll receive an extra 30 days to return items beyond the standard return policy window allowed for that item. There are only three types of purchases that don’t qualify for extended returns: Target Optical purchases, non-returnable items and contract phones.

Every Target Shopper Should Have A Redcard

Targets RedCard offers quite a few fantastic features, like 5% off all purchases, free 2-day shipping, and more. If you frequently shop at Target, just having a RedCard can save you hundreds per year with the 5% alone, but Target also has RedCard exclusive offers in its app that are super easy to access. My wife and I always scan everything we buy with the app prior to checking out, as itll automatically clip the digital coupons for any eligible product, with some being exclusive savings since we have a RedCard.

Target Redcard Mistake #: Not Paying Your Bill In Full On Time

All credit cards come with fees, but the credit version of the RedCard has high ones. The APR varies with the market but typically hovers between 20% and 25%. Late fees are $40 each and returned payments can add $29 to your next bill. In other words, if you dont pay your bill, it could snowball out of control before you know it.

You can avoid all these fees by sticking to your budget while youre in-store and setting up automatic monthly payments.

Pros And Cons Of The Target Redcard Credit Card

Does The Target Debit Card Affect Your Credit

The main advantage of choosing the credit card option is the ability to pay over time. Youll have 25 days to pay your bill after your statement closes before interest starts to accrue. Watch that date carefully, though: the APR on the Target RedCard is sky-high and will quickly chew through the 5% discount you get for using the card.

This option can also be good for someone looking to build credit. The Target credit card is easier to qualify for than most rewards credit cards, so it could be a solid option if you have fair or limited credit history. Your payment history will be reported to credit bureaus, giving you the opportunity to improve your credit score if you responsibly pay your bill.

This card, like many store cards, is known for offering low credit lines at first but raising the credit limit based on your payment history and use of the card. Some cardholders are eventually offered an upgrade to a Target Mastercard, which can be used at stores other than Target.

How Do Returns Work When Using Zip

If you need to return merchandise, work with the retailer directly to get your refund. Once its initiated, youll be reimbursed the amount youve paid so far to Zip, and any future installments will be canceled. If you have a remaining balance on the account, Zip will apply the refunded amount toward it.

Zip notes that Fashion Nova is one retailer that may give you a store credit for returns rather than a refund. In that case, youll still be responsible for paying the Zip loan.

Whats The Difference Between Target Redcard Credit And Debit

You might ask yourself Which Target RedCard should I get? considering there are both credit and debit offerings. Truthfully, the debit is the better card to get, in my opinion. Target breaks down the features of both the credit and debit cards. Heres what both the credit and debit cards offer:

  • 5% off every day at Target and Target.com
  • No annual fee
  • Free 2-day shipping on hundreds of thousands of items
  • RedCard Exclusives including special items, gifts, and offers
  • More return time get an additional 30-days for returns or exchanges

However, should you opt for the debit card, youll also get:

  • Linking to your existing checking account
  • Cash withdraw of up to $40 at checkout

Do keep in mind that applying for the Target RedCard Credit Card means that youll have a full-on credit card, with a purchase limit and minimum payments, as well as a ding on your credit score. Opting for the RedCard Debit Card means youll negate the credit score impact and have the ability to essentially spend whatevers in your checking account. This might be dangerous for some, but it also helps to keep in check what youre spending as you only can spend as much as is in your account.

In the end, wed recommend opting for the debit card here, as it gives the same benefits as the credit version and more.

What Credit Score Do I Need To Get A Target Redcard

Local expert gives advice for Target credit card breach

Credit eligibility for the Target REDcard varies, as the company weighs income, outstanding debt, and credit history when deciding whether to approve an application. Many cardholders report having fair credit score at the time of approval. According to a Target customer representative, Target doesnt use just one credit agency to evaluate creditworthiness. They choose which agency to request reports from at random, with Equifax coming up most often.

How Does Only Using Your Debit Card Affect Your Credit

Really, your debit card isnt doing you any favors when it comes to building credit. .

Your debit card could potentially affect your credit score if you overdraft, that fee goes to collections, and that collection account then gets reported to the credit bureaus, says Todd Christensen, education manager for Money Fit, a debt management nonprofit and author of Everyday Money for Everyday People.

If youre not using your credit account to make any purchases or pay any bills, it will still appear on your credit report, explains Ashley Dull, a credit strategist with CardRates, a credit card guide.

Maintaining on-time payments is the best thing you can do for your credit score, so if youre not using your credit card at all, youre losing the ability to show lenders you can effectively manage payments, Dull says.

There is one perk of not using your credit card frequently, though, points out Adrian Nazari, CEO and founder of personal finance website

Having a low or zero balance on a credit card can affect your credit positively as it will help to lower your credit utilization ratio, Nazari says. Credit utilization is one of the most important factors in credit score calculation.

It helps to remember the rule of 30 when it comes to credit usage: It makes up 30 percent of your FICO score and you should keep your credit card balances under 30 percent.

Purchases That Can Harm Your Credit

Do you live your life as if everything you do could be made public? I once heard a suggestion that you should judge every decision you make based on whether you would like to see this decision on the front page of the New York Times. That is a good theory, but I cant say I fully live by this philosophy.

Regardless of the life decisions I make, my purchase decisions are being recorded and analyzed. Almost all of my spending, particularly my major spending, is accomplished through a . I only buy what I can afford and I pay the bill in full every month, but the fact I dont enter debt or pay interest fees is besides the point.

Based on the places I shop, credit card companies may decide that, based on studies and calculations of the American consuming public en masse, I have become a riskier consumer. If I shop at Some Discount Store, and the algorithms show that people who shop at Some Discount Store are more likely to miss payments or default on a loan, the credit card companies can increase my rates or lower my credit limit. They can change the terms of my credit agreement without missing a payment, exceeding my credit limit, or using a higher percentage of my available credit. Yes, the credit card companies can decide to categorize me in a lower credit class based on where I shop. The doesnt change this possibility.

Does Zip Report Your Activity To Credit Bureaus

Though some buy-now-pay-later services may help improve your credit, Zip does not report on-time or late payments to credit bureaus. However, your Zip account may be reported to credit bureaus if you dont make payments and your account goes to collections.

Also, keep in mind that you can use a credit card to pay your Zip balance. Zip bills your credit card, so if you dont make your credit card payment on time, your credit card issuer may report your late or delinquent payments to the credit bureaus.

On the other hand, your credit card issuer will also likely report on-time payments to the bureaus, which can help build your credit.

Zip notes that accounts go to collections mainly because payment cards on file are expired and cant be used to make an installment payment. You can keep this from happening by adding a backup card to your Zip account.

How To Use Zip Online

To use Zip online, you need to access the stores through the app. Search the app to see if the retailer is listed. If you find the store you want, do your shopping as normal within the app, and then click the Pay with Zip button at checkout. Zip will generate a virtual card youll use to pay for your purchase. Then, youll receive the details of how much your payments will be and when theyre due. Once you accept these terms, youll enter your virtual card information and complete the payment.

You can see your balance in the app, and the amount will adjust as you make new purchases and payments, just like with a credit card.

Blue Cash Preferred Card From American Express

Target targeted by hackers putting credit card info at risk

The awards 6% cash back at supermarkets.

Although Target is not classified as a supermarket, many consumers have found that if they use the card to purchase Target gift cards at grocery stores, they can effectively earn cash back on their Target purchases.

It is an extra step but, for some people, it is worth it. An additional benefit of the Citi and American Express cards is that they can both be used anywhere and arent limited to just Target stores.

Otherwise, most other credit cards cannot compare to the Target REDcard because they don’t have a rewards program that offers 5% back at Target.

The reason is that many rewards credit cards exclude superstores such as Target and Walmart from their rewards program.

Even though they may be considered “supermarkets” or “grocery stores,” most rewards credit cards won’t consider them as such.

Target Redcard: Credit Vs Debit

I was thinking about applying for the Target REDcard. The reason I want the card is the 5% discount and free shipping. I know that they also have it in a debit card version. Is there any reason to get the credit version vs the debit? I looked through the approvals and most have a low starting limit.

The credit really only has an advantage if you want to float a purchase or pay one off over time. My limit got up to $1300 in about a year but it seems I was lucky compared to what I’ve heard from others. I have the debit card version also.

Mistake No : I Used Retirement Money To Pay It Off

Do Debit Cards Affect a Credit Score?

Any financial advisor will tell you that this is a big no-no. Even if youre deeply in debt thanks to sky-high credit card APRs, its almost never a good idea to withdraw retirement funds early, thanks to taxes and withdrawal penalties. Plus, youll sacrifice future gains from that money, and future gains are the entire point of such funds.

At the time, in 2012, I had more than $10,000 of debt on my Target card alone. Id just moved from South Carolina to Los Angeles , and bills were piling up like cars on the 405. I felt quite frankly like I was drowning.

It was certainly not the smartest money decision Ive ever made, and I paid for it dearly at tax time the next year.

To my younger and less financially educated self, the ability to pay off a large and extremely high-interest debt in one fell swoop felt worth it, especially since it didnt completely drain my IRA. The truth is, I was so happy to be rid of that debt that I didnt care about the consequences.

It was certainly not the smartest money decision Ive ever made, and I paid for it dearly at tax time the next year.
