Why Were You Offered A Pre

How CREDIT LIMITS Affect Your Credit Score

If you already have an account with a bank, they may pre-approve a credit increase or a new line of credit because they recognize you for being a good customer. By diligently paying off your card every month and staying on top of your current loans, your bank now trusts that you will pay them back if they increase your available credit.

Pro tip: If your issuer notifies you that you are pre-approved, ask them for points in return for raising your credit limit. They may not always say yes, but some issuers do this. Its worth a try.

When Can You Request A Credit Limit Increase

Your credit card issuer sets your credit limit when you apply for your credit card. Some issuers require you to hold a card for a minimum amount of time before requesting a credit limit increase. And some issuers have policies regarding how frequently you can request a credit limit increase.

For example, if you have an American Express card, you can request a credit limit increase once your account has been open for at least 60 days. And, if you have a Capital One card, you generally arent eligible for a credit line increase if you opened your account within the past several months.

You may request a credit line increase anytime you like with Capital One, but in general, Capital One doesnt change an accounts credit line more often than every six months. Other issuers such as Chase and Citi likely have policies regarding when theyll increase your credit line, but these policies arent publicly available.

Some credit card issuers may automatically increase your credit limit if youve used it responsibly for a certain amount of time. And, in the case of some secured credit cards, the issuer may even move you from a secured credit line to an unsecured credit line.

Raising Your Credit Limit May Involve A New Credit Check

If you have done the numbers and still want to change your credit limit, there is something else to consider: it may involve the bank running a credit check as part of their decisioning process.

This matters if you are planning to apply for a new credit card, finance, lease, personal or home loan because:

  • banks may consider several applications for credit within a short period of time as a sign of underlying financial problems, even though your credit score may not be affected or temporarily drop by a few points
  • banks may be less reluctant to approve a customer’s application when another bank has recently rejected an application.

A bank performing a credit check has a small, short-term effect on your credit score, but as we will go on to discuss, a rejected application is more problematic.

How Asking For A Credit Limit Increase Works

The process for requesting a credit limit increase can vary depending on the credit card issuer, but it’s not something that’s typically difficult to do. Some companies let you make a request online, while others ask you to call a representative. You can often ask to raise your credit limit by a specific amount.

If you’re unsure and can’t find the information online, call your card issuer and ask whether it will use a soft or hard inquiry. You can also ask if it’s likely that your request will be approved. However, they likely won’t be able to guarantee a result before you make the request.

While a single hard inquiry can stay on your , the impact on your scores will be temporary and should not be a significant factor when you responsibly seek credit. Multiple inquiries in a short time period, on the other hand, can be a cause for concern when it comes to credit cards.

Reducing Your Credit Limit May Increase Your Debt To Credit Ratio

Knowing that your debt to credit ratio is an important factor in the calculation of your credit score, it makes sense to consider what it may be in future should you decide to reduce your credit limit.

If it works out that reducing your credit limit will increase your debt-to-credit ratio substantially and you have the funds available then it may be a good idea to make a one-off payment before reducing your credit limit. You can calculate your current debt to credit ratio easily and since you know how much additional credit you are applying for, you can calculate what it would be if approved and therefore what to pay down to keep a low debt to credit ratio.

One of the most influential factors in your credit score is your or the amount of revolving credit you use in relation to the amount you have available, both for each individual card you own and as an aggregate of all your credit lines, says Timothy E. Hansen, founder and CEO of Wealth Growth Wisdom, LLC.

Thats why simply making minimum payments on time isnt enough if youre striving for a high credit score. Among other things, you need to keep your credit utilization under 30%. Otherwise, your credit score may lose quite a few points.

Taking on a higher credit limit can help bring your credit utilization ratio down, as long as you can resist the urge to spend more once you get the additional credit.

Timothy E. Hansen, founder and CEO of Wealth Growth Wisdom, LLC.

This means that if, for instance, you reach a $3,000 balance on a credit card with a $10,000 limit, you may see your credit score decline. To avoid that, keep track of your credit card spending and keep your credit utilization ratio in the single digits for the best results.

This is where getting a higher credit limit can help as well.

For example, if you carry the same $3,000 balance but have your credit limit increased to $15,000, your credit utilization comes down to 20%, and you might see your score improve as a result.

Increase The Length Of Your Credit History

The longer you have a credit account open and in use, the better it is for your score. Your credit score may be lower if you have credit accounts that are relatively new.

If you transfer an older account to a new account, the new account is considered new credit.

For example, some credit card offers come with a low introductory interest rate for balance transfers. This means you can transfer your current balance to this new product. The new product is considered new credit.

Consider keeping an older account open even if you don’t need it. Use it from time to time to keep it active. Make sure there is no fee if the account is open but you don’t use it. Check your credit agreement to find out if there is a fee.

Advantages Of A Higher Limit

Reduced Credit Utilization. When you accept a credit limit increase, as long you use it responsibly and forgo increasing your spending, it will reduce your credit utilization. Why does that matter? Credit utilization is one of the key criteria credit reporting agencies like Equifax and TransUnion use to calculate your .

Financial Emergencies. Credit doesnt just grow on trees. Credit can be hard to come by, especially when you need it most. If you run into an emergency, youll be glad you have the financial cushion. Although its almost always a good idea to have an emergency fund of three to six months living expenses set aside, there are some times when you may need to rely on credit.

For example, if youre a snowbird travelling to the U.S. and you run into an emergency, your credit card can help you out of a financial jam. Youll be thankful you have this extra credit at your disposal.

Reward Points on Major Purchases. If used responsibly, a higher credit limit can mean more of your daily spending can be moved to the credit card, and it turn earn more reward points. You can rack up a lot of rewards points by making major purchases on your plastic, instead of writing checks or using your debit card. Paying the taxman with your credit card and paying for major renovations are also great ways to accumulate a lot of points.

When To Get A Credit Limit Increase

Why A Credit Card Limit Increase Will BOOST YOUR CREDIT SCORE

While a credit limit increase can seem dangerous for someone already saddled with credit card debt, a higher limit can be necessary for some people to make ends meet, Ted Rossman, an industry analyst at Creditcards.com, tells CNBC Make It. While it’s ideal not to carry any credit card debt at all, “of course that isn’t happening” for many people, he says. America is a consumer debt society.

“In the abstract, a higher credit limit should help your credit score because it will lower your credit utilization ratio as long as how much you owe remains constant or goes down,” says Rossman. But, “if there’s any chance you’ll view a higher credit limit as an excuse to get deeper into debt, you should avoid it.”

Matt Schulz, chief industry analyst at CompareCards.com, agrees that the situation is complicated.

“If you have credit card debt, getting a credit line increase can be like making the hole in the bottom of a sinking boat bigger instead of working to plug it,” Schulz tells CNBC Make It. “If you feel your debt is out of control and that a higher limit would just lead you to spend more, you should absolutely, positively not get one.”

Heres What Happens When You Try To Spend More Than Your Available Credit:

If you try to make purchases on a card with no available credit, there may be consequences. In most cases, the transaction will simply be denied. Other cards may process it but then hit you with an over-limit fee and maybe even reduce your limit, too. A high penalty interest rate might also apply, perhaps canceling any low introductory APR previously in effect. Over-limit policies vary by issuer, so be sure to review your cards terms and conditions or contact customer service for specifics.

Will Requesting A Credit Line Increase Affect My Credit Score

  • Negatively, because the request itself will give the creditor reason to make a hard pull on your credit report which will then drop your score temporarily. It affects it for about a year and drops off after 2 years.

  • Positively, because if granted the credit increase you will then lower your credit-to-debt ratio aka your credit utilization percentages.

Basically, the more credit you have and the lower your balance, the better you look like a customer/client/applicant.

As you can see, the good definitely outweighs the bad. Once the increase kicks in you will also get a boost in your score. Oftentimes, that boost will be higher than the drop.

Lowering your utilization which you want to be kept below 20% and if youre trying to raise your credit score by 200 points or more, youll actually want to keep that number below 10%.

How Credit Card Companies Determine Credit Limits

Kevin Haney, president of Growing Family Benefits, explains that credit card issuers determine credit limits by considering data reported by other lenders and private transaction information.

Haney spent a decade as an executive with Experian working directly with many major credit card-issuing banks assisting with their risk management and marketing efforts.

Consumer credit reports reveal how a person is handling their obligations with other institutions, he says. Banks set initial limits when opening an account. Plus, many receive periodic updates from the bureaus to adjust limits up to capture more significant wallet share and down to minimize losses when people start running into trouble.

According to Haney, card transaction information that is not reported to the credit bureaus also goes into the equation. For example, cardholders who pay a large percentage of the balance each month are more likely to get an increase than those who make only the minimum payment.

Also, the merchant type is a factor, he adds. For instance, a person who regularly gambles online could be less likely to receive an increase.
