Theres something appealing about strolling through Home Depots wide aisles, dreaming of home improvement projects that might be in your future. Unfortunately, The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card doesnt elicit the same good vibes, despite its $0 annual fee.
Thats because the store-branded card doesn’t earn ongoing rewards and offers little in the way of perks. Even the most loyal Home Depot fan would probably be better off with a flat-rate cash-back or rewards card.

How Can I Get Approved For A Home Depot Credit Card
To apply for a Home Depot credit card, you can fill out an application on the Home Depot website or in any Home Depot store. You will need to provide personal information, such as contact info and your Social Security number. Once you submit your application, youll generally get an instant decision.
What Could Be Improved
Despite its perks, The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card also has a few big flaws that hurt its value.
The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card doesn’t earn rewards points, cash back, or any other type of rewards on your purchases. This is a significant disadvantage compared to the best credit cards, and even compared to other store credit cards.
Some store cards earn cash back on purchases. Many others earn rewards points that can be redeemed for a gift card. Rewards like these are a nice way to get something of value on your spending and can help make store credit cards worth it. Because this Home Depot credit card doesn’t offer rewards, the only reason to use it is for its financing offers.
Can only be used at The Home Depot
This is a closed-loop store credit card, which is one of the major differences between most store cards and traditional credit cards. “Closed loop” means a card can only be used with the retailer that issued it — in this case, at The Home Depot stores and on The Home Depot website.
Quite a few store credit cards are like this, but it’s still a notable drawback. You’re very limited in terms of where you can use a Home Depot card, and it’s usually better to have a credit card you can use anywhere you want.
Deferred interest financing
As explained earlier, the financing you get from The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card is deferred interest. While that can help you avoid interest, it’s important to fully understand how deferred interest works.

Us Bank Visa Platinum Card
Depending on the size and expense of your home project, a 0% APR card with a long introductory period might make more sense than a branded store card. The U.S. Bank Visa Platinum offers a 0% intro APR for the first 20 billing cycles on purchases and balance transfers, has no annual fee, and a regular variable APR of 14.49%-24.49%.
Theres a bit less risk with this card than the Home Depot Consumer Credit Card too. Any balance remaining at the end of the intro period will only begin accruing interest from that date, rather than taking on retroactive interest from your purchase date like the Home Depot cards deferred interest offer.
However, you should still pay off as much of your balance as possible and ideally all of it before the end of your introductory period to avoid being hit with the high ongoing APR. You also wont earn any special rewards or discounts with this card, but it can be a good choice to give yourself a buffer to pay down your project expenses.

If you want to take advantage of a 0% APR introductory period and the opportunity to earn some cash back over time, the Capital One Quicksilver Card could be a good option. Re: What Credit Score Do You Need For Home Depot Credit Card
wrote:After your comment I am planning more to only apply for the Citi double cash back. if aapproved I can build some relationship with citi bank and go for there store cards in a later time. The only reason I am benting on the home depot credit card is because I have a multi family owned propetry I am fed up with purchasing material without having the option to carry a balance with zero apr. I would consider the commercial credit card but idk what the procedure and qualifications are and don’t have the family business in my name and the business credit score is horrible Idk if that even matters.
Have you considered Lowe’s? It’s backed by Sync bank and they seem to be a little easier to get than Home Depot and easier to get CLIs with. DH was approved for 3K and before the card even came, he was able to get bumped up to 25K as have many other members of the forum. We considered Home Depot but have read that they are hard to get CLIs with and the card is not very useful if it has a low limit. I have a Citi DC with a low limit and didn’t want to risk another low limit with Home Depot. YMMV Good luck.
Well, the way I am, I’d apply for both credit cards, and for me it’s just a matter of which one to apply for first.
The Citi DC is great for the 2% rewards.
If interest-free financing of six months is the goal, there are consumer versions available from both Lowes and Home Depot .
