Does Being An Authorized User Affect Your Credit

Adding AUTHORIZED USER to credit card (Increase Your Credit Score FAST)

Being an authorized user can affect your credit in both positive and negative waysbut it can also have no affect on your credit whatsoever.

There are two factors you need to consider:

  • Whether the lender reports authorized users to the credit bureaus
  • Whether both the credit account owner and the authorized user use their shared account responsibly

In order for your authorized user account to affect your credit, the lender or credit card issuer needs to report that account to the three major credit bureaus . If the lender doesnt report authorized user accounts to the credit bureaus, then those accounts wont influence your credit rating. Authorized user accounts must show up on your credit report to affect your credit score. If they do, you might see your score change as soon as the lender starts reporting that information to the credit bureaus, which can take as little as 30 days.

Once the authorized user account is part of your credit history, it can benefit your credit score as long as both you and the credit account holder use the account responsibly. If the account holder makes regular on-time payments, for example, you would also get credit for those payments and your credit score could go up. On the other hand, if you and the credit account holder run up a high revolving balance on the credit account, both of your credit scores could take a hit.

How do I add an authorized user to my Capital One account?

Thats how it works in general. But there are some details you should be aware of before adding an authorized user to your Capital One card.

Pros And Cons Of Adding An Authorized User

Does Capital One Report Authorized Users to Credit Bureaus?

Adding an authorized user comes with both risks and rewards. Most of the rewards, though, go to authorized users, while most of the risk falls to primary cardholders.

  • When you add an authorized user, youll provide a boost to that users credit score. Whenever your on-time credit card payments and account history are reported to the credit bureaus, your users will also receive a bump to their score.
  • Building a credit score from scratch: Youll also help authorized users build credit scores if they dont have one. This is why many parents add their children as authorized users. These children might not have borrowed money to buy a car or be making regular payments on their own credit cards. Because of this, they dont have enough of a credit history to generate a credit score. Adding them as authorized users will give them that needed credit history.
  • Generate more rewards points: Whenever an authorized user makes a purchase with your card, that purchase will generate rewards points or cash-back bonuses if you have a rewards card. This can help you build points and earn cash back at a quicker pace.

When Should You Add Or Become An Authorized User

When you designate someone as an authorized user youre indicating that you trust that person, at least to a certain extent. Likewise, when you become an authorized user youre showing that you trust the primary cardholder to use the account properly.

In general, you should have a good relationship with anyone you share a credit card account with. And if youre going to be the authorized user, you should be sure that the primary cardholder understands how credit cards work.

Remember that personal relationships can change quickly, but legal relationships tend to be more difficult to get out of. You can always remove someone as an authorized user or cancel your own authorized user account.

There are quite a few reasons why it might be a good idea to designate an authorized user, or become one yourself.

You should only use one of these strategies if youre committed to using credit cards responsibly. Otherwise, you and the authorized user could suffer with lower credit scores and all the negative consequences that result, like higher interest rates and difficulty qualifying for financing.

How Long Does A Credit Line Increase Take

If youre requesting the increase online, your credit limit increase may be approved immediately after you provide some information, such as your employment status and annual income. In other cases, it might take a few days to get a response from the issuer.

Similarly, if you call to request an increase, a Capital One representative might give you the decision right away or take a few days to review your account.
