Some Defaults Or Missed Payments & Declined Applications
Defaults or missed payments will usually stay on your report for six years. If you close an account, the missed payments could stay on the account for six years after the closure, so keep that in mind. Bankruptcy is wiped six years from the date you’re declared bankrupt, provided it’s been discharged.
And when it comes to declined applications, lenders can only see whether you’ve applied for credit elsewhere, not whether you’ve been accepted or declined. However, they may be able to guess by examining the credit accounts you have open and when they were opened.
If you’ve attempted to, or have successfully reclaimed PPI or bank charges, it won’t appear on your credit files. If you’ve had bank charges, the penalties will show on your records.
How To Build Credit Without A Credit Card
While credit cards are a great tool for building credit, they aren’t your only option. Since your credit score is a reflection of how well you’ve managed debt in the past, any accounts you have that are reported to credit bureaus in good standing have the potential to help you boost your score.
Even if you’re just starting out and don’t yet have any credit accounts, there are other ways you can build your score over time. Here are four strategies for building credit without a credit card:
How Does Your Credit Score Compare
Most of the top credit rating agencies have five categories for credit scores: excellent, good, fair, poor and very poor. Each credit rating agency uses a different numerical scale to determine your credit score which means each CRA will give you a different credit score. However, youll probably fall into one category with all the agencies, since they all base their rating on your financial history.
A fair, good or excellent Experian Credit Score
Experian is the largest CRA in the UK. Their scores range from 0-999. A credit score of 721-880 is considered fair. A score of 881-960 is considered good. A score of 961-999 is considered excellent .
A fair, good or excellent TransUnion Credit Score
TransUnion is the UKs second largest CRA, and has scores ranging from 0-710. A credit score of 566-603 is considered fair. A credit score of 604-627 is good. A score of 628-710 is considered excellent .
A fair, good or excellent Equifax Credit Score
Equifax scores range from 0-700. 380-419 is considered a fair score. A score of 420-465 is considered good. A score of 466-700 is considered excellent .

Make Sure You Use Your Credit Card To Maintain Your Good Credit
While a credit card can be a valuable tool when it comes to building credit or maintaining good credit, the opposite is also true. If you use your credit card irresponsibly, you can cause damage to your credit and see your score drop in a hurry.
To make the most of your credit card, you should keep in mind the factors used to determine your credit score. For example, your payment history makes up 35% of your FICO score and is the biggest determinant as to whether you have a good or bad score. Thats why its so important to pay your credit card bill and all your other bills on time each month.
Another factor that affects your credit score is the amount you owe in relation to your credit limits, which is known as your . Experts suggest keeping the amount you owe on your credit cards at 30% or lower for the best results. This would mean owing $3,000 or less on total credit limits of $10,000.
Finally, you should also check your credit reports for errors that could be harming your credit, such as accounts that arent yours or incorrectly noted late payments. If you find any problems, you should take steps to dispute the errors with the credit bureaus so they can be fixed right away. Fortunately, you can check your credit reports for free using the website AnnualCreditReport.com.
Do Coronavirus Payment Holidays Affect Credit Files
At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, lenders were offering coronavirus-related payment holidays on mortgages, credit cards, loans etc to customers struggling to make repayments. You needed to have applied for a payment holiday by 31 March, and if you did, here’s how taking one might have impacted your credit file:
- The first six months of a payment holiday shouldn’t be reported as missed payments on your credit file. But even if the payment holiday’s NOT on your credit file, lenders can still find out about it in other ways eg, they can see your mortgage balance isn’t going down and can use that information to help their decision when you next apply for credit.
- Further help after a six-month payment holiday WILL go on your credit file. Lenders are supposed to report any further ‘forbearance’ after you’ve had six months of payment holidays to credit reference agencies. Your lender should let you know if the support it’s offering you would affect your credit report.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Good Credit Score
It depends on where youre starting from and what challenges youre facing. But building good credit probably wont happen overnight.
If youre brand new to credit, it could take months of using beginner products like secured cards to make significant progress in the types of financial products you qualify for. If you have dings on your credit reports, like late or missed payments or a bankruptcy, it could take years for those derogatory marks to fall off and stop affecting your scores.
But even if you have years left before those derogatory marks officially fall off, you can still see significant progress. The important thing is to work steadily toward getting your credit in good shape and understand that building credit is a journey.
Your Credit Report Dictates The Product And Rate You’ll Get
In the past 10 years the credit landscape has almost completely shifted towards ‘rate for risk’. This means almost every credit provider on the market uses your credit file to not only dictate whether they’ll provide you with credit, but also what interest rate you’ll get.
The most obvious way this manifests itself is in representative rates on loans.
Here, only a minimum of 51% of accepted customers must get the rate advertised. They might be advertising a 6% rate . But you could be accepted and offered a 40% interest rate instead, because of a poor credit score.
It applies to other products too. Some 0% credit cards give you a shorter 0% period if you’ve got a poor credit history , others will simply offer you a different product to the one you’ve applied for. This is why it’s so important to manage your creditworthiness.

Register To Vote Or It’s Much Harder To Get Credit
If you’re not on the electoral roll, it’s much harder to get accepted for credit, so sign up immediately. Don’t wait for the annual reminder or for the elections to roll around, apply at any time on Gov.uk.
Simply follow the instructions online it’ll ask you a series of questions aimed at identifying you, and the local electoral borough you need to register with. Note that you’ll need your national insurance number to hand.
Many worry some councils sell on the data. But you can opt out of the open electoral register which can be used for marketing.
Credit reference agencies are allowed to use the full register which you can’t opt out of and that you should, by law, be on. The electoral roll can be a factor in scoring, but even where it isn’t, not being on it can lead to delays as lenders also use it to check your address and ID.
It’s worth noting the credit scores sold to you by credit reference agencies may show you’ve a perfect score without being on the electoral roll. Don’t let that fool you into thinking not being registered won’t affect your ability to get credit. It will, because lenders also need to be sure you are who you say you are.

Questions To Ask Before You Apply
Before you apply for a credit card you believe youll be eligible for based on your credit score, you should ask yourself what you hope to get in return. The following questions can help you decide which credit card offer is the best for your needs and goals.
Also, as you prepare to fill out a credit card application, keep in mind that Consumer Financial Protection Bureau regulations allow you to list your entire household income and not just your own when applying for a card. This can make qualifying for a card exceptionally easier if youre a stay-at-home parent with a working spouse or if you only work part-time but your partner earns a generous amount.
Use A Credit Build Card To Build A History & Restore Past Issues
You need to build a decent recent history to show that you can be responsible with credit and use it well. The catch-22 is that as you have a poor credit history, getting credit is difficult.
The solution is to grab a credit rebuild card. See the full guide for full help, how to protect yourself, and top picks.
This is a card with a hideous rate, say 35% APR, which accepts people with a poor credit history. Yet provided you repay the card IN FULL each month, preferably by direct debit, and never withdraw cash, you won’t be charged interest, so it’s no problem.
Then just spend say, £50 a month on the card, and provided you have no other issues after six months or so, things should start to improve. After a year, it should make quite a difference.
Obviously, if you already have a credit card you aren’t using, then you can do the same on that without the need to apply for a new one.

What Is A Credit Score
The first thing to say is that there is no one universal credit score. Instead, the three main credit reference agencies – Experian, Equifax and TransUnion – use information gathered from lenders and other official sources that give insight into your credit history and overall credit worthiness. This information forms the basis of your credit report, which is then transformed into a credit score, based on each agencys unique calculation.
The score will range from 0-999 for Experian, 0-1000 for Equifax and 0-710 for TransUnion. This can make it challenging to draw direct comparisons between each one and to determine what qualifies as a good or bad score.
Risk Indicator And Other Components Of An Individuals Solvency
- 1 is the lowest indicator that clients without education, living in small settlements, under the age of 21 have
- 2 is a score given to clients living in disadvantaged regions under the age of 25 or over 65
- 3 is an indicator typical for borrowers with average unremarkable characteristics
- 4 is a good indicator for people aged 30-50 years with higher education and married
- 5 is the highest indicator value provided to trustworthy clients with good income.
The maximum credit rating score can only be obtained if the borrower has a risk indicator of 5.

How Long Does It Take To Rebuild A Credit Score
There’s no set timeline for rebuilding your credit. How long it takes to increase your credit scores depends on what’s hurting your credit and the steps you’re taking to rebuild it.
For instance, if your score takes a hit after a single missed payment, it might not take too long to rebuild it by bringing your account current and continuing to make on-time payments. However, if you miss payments on multiple accounts and you fall over 90 days behind before catching up, it will likely take longer to recover. This effect can be even more exaggerated if your late payments result in repossession or foreclosure.
In either case, the impact of negative marks will diminish over time. Most negative marks will also fall off your credit reports after seven years and stop impacting your scores at that point if not sooner. Chapter 7 bankruptcies can stay for up to 10 years, however.
In addition to letting time help you rebuild your scores, you can follow the steps above to proactively add positive information to your credit reports.
What Is A Good Credit Score According To Lenders
Lenders, such as credit card issuers and mortgage providers, may set their own standards on what “good credit” means as they decide whether to grant you credit and at what interest rate.
In practice, though, a good credit score is the one that helps you get what you need or want, whether that’s access to new credit in a pinch or lower mortgage rates.
Whats A Utilization Ratio Or Debt
According to Equifax, your debt-to-credit ratio, also known as your utilization ratio, is the amount of your debt compared to your credit limit.5 Your debt-to-credit ratio is important because if your ratio is high, it can indicate that youre a higher-risk borrower.5 Thats because lenders see borrowers who use a lot of their available credit as a greater risk.5
For example, imagine you have a couple of credit cards and a line of credit with a total debt of $14,000 and a combined limit of $20,000. Your debt-to-credit ratio would be 70%.
According to the Government of Canada, a ratio of 35% or below on credit cards, loans and lines of credit is recommended.3
Renting A Home Or Apartment
When youre looking for a new place to live, having your credit reviewed is a necessary part of the application process. Owners and property managers want to know how reliable you are with paying your bills to see if they can depend on you to pay your rent on time. Having a higher may mean you are chosen out of a pool of applicants when the rental market is hot. Though a low credit score doesnt rule you out as a candidate for a home or apartment, dont be surprised if you need to pay a larger security deposit.
