How Often Can You Request A Credit Report

How Often Should I Check My Credit Report

How Often Should You Check Your Credit Report?

Credit reporting errors happen more frequently than many people realize. A Federal Trade Commission study found that one in five Americans has an error on a credit report.

The best way to discover whether you have credit reporting errors is to check your three reports from Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. The FCRA gives you the right to claim a free copy of each of your credit reports from all three credit bureaus once every 12 months. To exercise this right, visit AnnualCreditReport.com.

But if you want to make sure that your credit reports stay accurate, checking them once every 12 months isn’t nearly enough. You should check your credit reports at least once a quarter, and once a month is probably best.

Place A Credit Freeze

Contact each credit reporting agency to place a freeze on your credit report. Each agency accepts freeze requests online, by phone, or by postal mail.

Experian

PO Box 26Pittsburgh, PA 15230-0026

Your credit freeze will go into effect the next business day if you place it online or by phone. If you place the freeze by postal mail, it will be in effect three business days after the credit agency receives your request. A credit freeze does not expire. Unless you lift the credit freeze, it stays in effect.

Review Your Report & Dispute Any Errors

Reading your credit report is one of the most vital steps when it comes to building credit and maintaining it. While reviewing your report, make sure your personal and account information is accurate.

Common credit reporting errors to look for include the following:

  • Incorrect name or address
  • Paid accounts that are listed as open
  • Account balance or credit limit errors
  • Accounts that dont belong to you

If you spot an error, dispute it with each credit bureau that lists it on your report or the creditor that reported it. The investigation will typically take 30 days to complete. Once its over, the credit bureau will remove the information if it finds that it is in fact an error.

What If Your Credit Limit Seems Low

A low credit limit is not the same as a low credit score. A lack of credit history can lead to a lower limit. This is because the credit card issuer doesnt have enough information to justify giving you access to a large amount of money via a high credit limit on a credit card.

Opening a credit card is like starting a new relationship: You have to build trust. Your initial credit limit reflects your issuer extending you a small amount of trust. If you establish a good credit history i.e., build trust they may be more comfortable increasing your credit limit in the future.

Problems With Credit Reporting

How Well Do You Know Your Credit

Heres where it gets complicated. Some businesses only provide information to the CRAs when an account is past due or has been written off and/or turned over to a collection agency. Creditors will write off a debt when it is deemed uncollectible.

Some of these creditors include:
  • Utility companies
  • Doctors and hospitals
  • Lawyers and other professionals.

The three reporting agencies are making increasing efforts to gather monthly information from utility companies, phone companies and local retailers. That increases the amount of data in an individuals credit profile, which cuts down on the guesswork.

    Increasing Your Credit Score

How To Get Your Free Credit Report

Getting a credit limit increase is also a great way to decrease your utilization and therefore raise your credit score. Utilization is 30% of your FICO credit score and it is based on how much of your total credit limit that you are using.

So for example if you have a $10,000 total credit limit and you are using $5,000 of that $10,000 limit, then your utilization is 50%. You typically want your utilization to be under 30% although I recommend to keep it under 10%.

This is one of the easiest ways to instantly boost your credit score.

Track Your FICO® Credit Score with Discover

How much of a credit increase you should request depends a lot on your starting limit.

If your starting credit line is $10,000, then requesting a 100% increase could be too aggressive. However, if your credit limit is $500 then requesting a 100% increase could make a lot of sense.

Discover is tricky because the process is a true black box and outcomes are unpredictable. Ive seen reports of people getting several thousand dollars in increases while many others are limited to only $500 increases.

My one bit of advice would be to start off small and be patient. I think requesting a 25% increase is generally a conservative approach.

Here are some self-reported examples for Discover credit line increases. Below, Ive listed the amount of the increase and if enough information was given, the percentage that the credit line increased.

Like many other banks, Discover will sometimes grant you an automatic credit line increase.

For example, heres someone who got an automatic increase from $1,800 to $2,200.

Its very hard to predict when an automatic credit line increase will happen so your best bet is to use your card often and never miss a payment and just cross your fingers.

Enter Your New Proposed Credit Limit

Youll be able to see your current credit limit for that card and then there will be a field for you to enter in your proposed new credit limit. Note that you are entering the amount for your desired total credit line for that card not the amount of the credit limit increase.

So for example if you have a $5,000 credit limit and you would like it increased to $10,000 then you should enter $10,000 in that field.

    How Does Credit Work

Your ability to borrow money or use credit depends on several factors including the availability of money, your previous experience borrowing money, and your history of repaying credit obligations. Availability of money is determined by general conditions in the economy. Rising interest rates generally lead to less money for individuals and businesses to borrow. This means that individuals will not only pay higher interest rates, but it takes a better credit history to qualify for loans.

Often, people do not know what their credit report says until they are turned down for credit. You may not get a loan because of negative information reported in your credit file. Or you might be turned down for a variety of other reasons such as not employed long enough or new to an area. If you have always paid cash for purchases and havent borrowed money before, you have no history or proof to indicate the type of credit risk you would be. Lenders have fewer clues in deciding whether to give you a loan. They may take longer to decide to approve a loan, charge you higher interest rates, or turn down your loan application altogether.

    Tips To Ensure Security

Phishing is a growing trend in the world of cybercrime. It is the act of portraying something legitimate to trick you into giving out your personal identification information, especially your Social Security numbers. Many of these phishing attacks occur through email or websites that look legitimate to the naked eye, but they are really set up to trick you. Here are some ways to protect yourself:

    • Never click or proceed to a website from an email, as it will often lead to one of these fraudulent sites.
