How To Help Your Credit Score

Keep Hard Inquiries To A Minimum

720CreditScore.com – How Installment Loans Help Your Credit Score Fast.

If you need to take out a loan, you can often check your rate with different lenders for free. This generally results in a soft credit check or a soft credit pull, where the lender gets access to a limited version of your credit report. These dont harm your credit score.

But once youre ready to apply for a loan, the lender may require a hard credit check or a hard credit pull. In this case, the lender gets full access to your credit report. Since each hard inquiry can cause your credit score to drop, its a good idea to wait until youre truly ready to apply with a lender.

If youre shopping for an auto loan or a mortgage specifically, you can check your rate via hard inquiry with multiple lenders and not be penalized, as long as you do all your rate shopping within a 30-day period. In this case, all the separate inquiries will be treated as a single inquiry on your credit report.

Payday Loans Can Kill Mortgage Applications

Some payday lenders disingenuously suggest that taking them out and repaying on time can boost your credit score, as it starts to build a history of better repayment. This is true to a very minor extent for those with abysmal credit histories though using a correctly is generally both more effective and far cheaper.

If you’re getting a mortgage though, by definition you’ll need a far better than abysmal credit score. So you should avoid payday loans like the plague. Not just because they’re hideously expensive see the Payday Loans guide but because some mortgage underwriters have openly said they simply reject anyone who has had a payday loan, as it’s an example of poor money management.

Many people were mis-sold payday loans they couldn’t afford to repay. If that happened to you, you can reclaim £100s or even £1,000s and request that any poor payment records on loans deemed to be ‘unaffordable’ are removed from your credit file. See our Reclaim Payday Loans for Free guide.

What Lenders Don’t Know Ignore Conspiracy Theories

Many people believe every element of their life is on their credit reference files, but actually it’s mainly just a strict set of financial data. Though over recent years, the information contained on them has grown.

So let’s debunk some myths. Here are a few of the more common things people think are on their files, but aren’t.

Race, religion, ethnicity

These personal details about you are not held.

Salary

How much you earn isn’t on your file either, though you’ll usually be asked on the application form.

Savings accounts

As savings are not a credit product, they don’t appear on credit files. This data is therefore only available to banks you hold savings accounts with. However, when you apply for a savings account, the provider might do a soft search of your credit report to check your ID, and do anti-money-laundering checks.

Medical record

Medical problems you may have had in the past aren’t listed.

Criminal record

No criminal convictions are listed.

There are a host of other things that aren’t held on your credit report, including:

‘soft Searches’ Incl If You’ve Checked Your Own File

Some lenders will do a soft search of your credit report, to tell you both whether you qualify to borrow from them, and what rate they are willing to give you. This isn’t passed on to other lenders when they credit-check you.

When you check your own file, it does appear on your credit report. It’s not always clear, but the words “administration check” or “quotation search” should indicate something, but lenders can’t see this so it doesn’t play any role in any assessment of you.

The Credit Repair Organizations Act

The makes it illegal for credit repair companies to lie about what they can do for you, and to charge you before they’ve performed their services. The CROA is enforced by the Federal Trade Commission and requires credit repair companies to explain:

  • your legal rights in a written contract that also details the services they’ll perform
  • your three day right to cancel without any charge
  • how long it will take to get results
  • the total cost you will pay
  • any guarantees

What if a credit repair company you hired doesn’t live up to its promises? You have some options. You can:

  • sue them in federal court for your actual losses or for what you paid them, whichever is more
  • seek punitive damages money to punish the company for violating the law
  • join other people in a class action lawsuit against the company, and if you win, the company has to pay your attorney’s fees

You Don’t Have A Uniform Credit Rating

There’s no such thing as a credit blacklist. This is a myth. In the UK, there’s no uniform credit rating or score, and there’s no blacklist of banned people.

Each lender scores you differently and secretly.

This means just because one lender has rejected you, it doesn’t automatically mean others will. Though after a rejection, it’s always important to check your credit file for errors before applying again.

Of course, if you’ve got a poor credit history, or had problems, it can feel like you’re blacklisted. Credit scoring is intuitive would you lend to someone with a history of not repaying? However, on occasion there are firms that specialise in lending to those who have had past problems though they then charge a whacking rate.

The tools that lenders use to decide aren’t universal either. As well as your credit file, they also look at application information and any past dealings they’ve had with you, and use the three sources of information to build up a picture of you.

Never get too close to your credit card spending limit

Let’s say your credit card company tells you you can have a credit card with a $100 spending limit. That’s how much money you can borrow and spend. But … you actually shouldn’t spend that full amount. You shouldn’t get even close to your $100 limit. You should spend much less. Just 30% of your spending limit, so $30. If your credit card limit is $1,000, you can spend $300. If you spend more than 30% of your limit, that hurts your credit.

So if you have a good credit score and you want to maintain it, spending 30% of your credit card limit is fine. If you have a $100 credit card limit and you only spend $30 each month, that keeps you at 30% utilization of your card, and the credit score people like that.

If you want to increase your credit score, though, you need to spend less than 30% of your spending limit. Only use $20 of your credit card limit. Or $15 . That shows the credit bureau that you don’t need all of their credit. And for some reason, that makes your credit score go up.

If you do need to use your full credit card limit, one way to get around this is to pay your balance before your statement date. Your statement date is different from your payment due date. The statement date is the day that credit card companies notify the credit bureaus of your card usage. If you can beat them to the punch and pay off the card before it’s reported, you can use more than 30% of your spending limit.

Don’t Withdraw Cash On Credit Cards

How to Improve Your Credit Score

One strategy some people use to improve their payment history is to take out a credit card that is easier to qualify for, like a gas station or store card, and consistently pay off the balance each month. The good behavior can slowly put you in a better financial position. But be careful this strategy doesn’t backfire on you: you don’t want to take out new cards if you think you will be tempted to rack up more debt.

Pay Attention To Credit Utilization

Your credit utilization rate is the amount of revolving credit youre using divided by the amount of revolving credit you have available. It makes up 30% of your credit score and is often the most overlooked method of improving your score. For most people, revolving credit just means credit cards, but it includes personal and home equity lines of credit as well. A good credit utilization rate never exceeds 30%. So, if you have a credit limit of $5,000, you should never use more than $1,500.

Don’t ‘spend’ Your Applications Too Often

Every time you apply for a credit product , it adds a footprint to your file for a year.

Too many, especially in a short space of time, can trigger rejections as it makes it look like you’re desperate for credit. Therefore, space out applications if you can and don’t do them frivolously.

In fact it’s almost worth thinking about applications as ‘spending’. Is it really worth spending an application on what you’re doing, or could you save it for something else?

So if you fancy a cashback credit card and have no other credit you need to apply for in the next six months or so, great, spend your application. But if you’re just about to apply for a mortgage, wait until after you’ve done that. Prioritising is important.

For the same reason, if you apply for a cheap credit card and don’t get the credit limit you need, don’t automatically apply for another one. Read the Low Credit Limit guide for more information.

How Long Does It Take To Rebuild A Credit Score

How Your Credit Score Can Help or Hurt You

There’s no set timeline for rebuilding your credit. How long it takes to increase your credit scores depends on what’s hurting your credit and the steps you’re taking to rebuild it.

For instance, if your score takes a hit after a single missed payment, it might not take too long to rebuild it by bringing your account current and continuing to make on-time payments. However, if you miss payments on multiple accounts and you fall over 90 days behind before catching up, it will likely take longer to recover. This effect can be even more exaggerated if your late payments result in repossession or foreclosure.

In either case, the impact of negative marks will diminish over time. Most negative marks will also fall off your credit reports after seven years and stop impacting your scores at that point if not sooner. Chapter 7 bankruptcies can stay for up to 10 years, however.

In addition to letting time help you rebuild your scores, you can follow the steps above to proactively add positive information to your credit reports.
