You Can Get Your Free Credit Report From These Sources

How to get your free credit reports in Alabama

Its possible to get your free credit reports in a matter of minutes from each of the three major U.S. credit bureaus: Experian, TransUnion and Equifax. You just need to know where to go and be prepared to prove that you are who you say you are.

Quick Links: How to Get a Free Credit Report

  • What to Do If You Find an Error on Your Credit Report
  • How To Get Your Free Credit Reports Directly From The Credit Bureaus

If youd rather get your free reports directly from the credit bureaus themselves, thats possible in two of the three cases. TransUnion doesnt offer a free credit report online.

    Equifax

    Equifax

To get your free credit report from Equifax, you must first sign up for the myEquifax program. As a member of myEquifax, you can get access to your Equifax credit report twice per year at no charge.

Beware, though, as Equifax may try to push you toward signing up for one of its paid products. It is not necessary to do this in order to get your free report.

    Experian

    Experian

You can sign up to get your free Experian credit report here. One nice thing about Experians offering is that you can access your credit report for free every 30 days after you sign up. This could be useful if youre in the process of trying to buy a house or car and want to keep close tabs on your report.

Again, beware of signing up for paid products with Experian.

    TransUnion

    TransUnion

TransUnion says you can access your credit report through its TransUnion Service Center, but most links on the page refer you to AnnualCreditReport.com.

The bureau may try to sell you its credit monitoring product for $24.95 a month. Dont do it! Heres why money expert Clark Howard says you should never pay for credit monitoring.

Q: Are There Any Other Situations Where I Might Be Eligible For A Free Report

A: Under federal law, youre entitled to a free report if a company takes adverse action against you, such as denying your application for credit, insurance, or employment, and you ask for your report within 60 days of receiving notice of the action. The notice will give you the name, address, and phone number of the consumer reporting company. Youre also entitled to one free report a year if youre unemployed and plan to look for a job within 60 days if youre on welfare or if your report is inaccurate because of fraud, including identity theft. Otherwise, a consumer reporting company may charge you up to $10.50 for another copy of your report within a 12-month period.

Under state law, consumers in Colorado, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont already have free access to their credit reports.

How To Order Your Free Credit Reports

One of the best ways to protect yourself from identity theft is to monitor your credit history. Now you can do that for free. Thanks to a new federal law, consumers can get one free credit report a year from each of the three national credit bureaus. Those bureaus are Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion.1 You can also get your reports for free from “specialty” credit bureaus. These companies prepare reports on your employment, insurance claims, rental and other histories.

Checking your credit reports at least once a year is a good way to discover identity theft. And the sooner identity theft is discovered, the easier it is to clear up. You can also identify errors in your credit reports that could be raising your cost of credit

How to Get & Review Your Free Credit Report

A word of caution before we dive into the best way to remove the collection account from your credit report:

    NCS wont make it easy.

Several complaints have been filed by people trying to negotiate with them. The company was even sued in 2017 for unfair debt collection practices!

The court document states the collection letter they sent to consumers was false, misleading and confusing to the unsophisticated consumer.

That directly violates your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act .

Plus, the debt was time-barred. That means the debt was so old that the statute of limitations kicked in and said the borrower could no longer be sued.

National Credit Systems Inc is more challenging to deal with than the average debt collector.

Should I Order Reports From All Three Credit Bureaus At The Same Time

You can order free reports at the same time, or you can stagger your requests throughout the year. Some financial advisors say staggering your requests during a 12-month period may be a good way to keep an eye on the accuracy and completeness of the information in your reports. Because each credit bureau gets its information from different sources, the information in your report from one credit bureau may not reflect all, or the same, information in your reports from the other two credit bureaus.

How Much Will A Judgment Affect My Credit Score

When judgments show up on your credit reports, they can do severe damage to your score. A judgment in your credit history means that a lender had such a difficult time recovering their money from you that they had to go to court.

Judgments tell potential lenders that you can’t be trusted to pay them back. Any lender still willing to do business with you will do so knowing that you are a risky customer. Because of this, they will likely impose stringent terms and higher interest rates to any line of credit they offer you.

Stop Calls From National Credit Systems Now

Before Nov. 20, 2021, you could get as many as 15 calls per day from a debt collector, according to a Consumer Credit Card Market Report.

    Thats way too many.

That has changed. Regulation F places strict limits on collection calls.

    • A debt collector cannot call you more than seven times within seven consecutive days.
    • If a debt collector speaks to you on the phone they must wait seven days before calling again.

Debt collectors can now contact you by email and text message as well, but you can tell them how they are permitted to contact you and when.

You can stop all communication from a debt collector.

Follow these simple steps to stop the calls.

  • Write a stop contact or cease letter telling them to stop contacting you.
  • Make a copy for yourself and mail the original to National Credit Systems.
  • To prove you sent the letter, send it by certified mail with return receipt requested.
  • Make sure you follow these exact steps.

If you do, the National Consumer Law Center states, the collector can only acknowledge the letter and notify you about legal steps the collector may take.

When you stop the phone calls, you get some breathing room. Remember that you still owe the debt, and the collector can take legal action.

Then you can tackle the next step.

Pro tip: Send the letter by certified mail with return receipt requested so you have proof the company received it.

    What Is A Judgment

How to get a Free Credit Report

A judgment is a court order that results from a lawsuit. Only civil judgments are reported to the credit bureaus. These types of judgments are court rulings that pertain to the repayment of a debt. When you owe a creditor money and don’t pay it, the creditor can try to recover it by going to court and suing you for it.

When a creditor sues for the money you owe, the court decides on the merits of the case. If a judge rules against you, the decision becomes a judgment against you. In the case that the judge decides you owe money, they can:

    • Order wage garnishment
    • Order you to come up with a payment plan with the lender
    • Allow the lender to attach liens to your property in order to recover their money

No matter what happens with a judgment, you’re forced to pay back what you owe because of the court order.

    Validate And Verify The Debt

Under the new regulations that came into effect on Nov. 30, 2021, debt collectors must send you a Notice of Debt within 5 days of their first contact with you. This notice must contain much more information than the notices that collectors sent under prior rules. If the notice is incomplete, it is invalid, and the debt isnt collectible. That makes it important to know whats required.

A valid Notice of Debt must contain an itemization date. This can be one of five different dates.

    • The date of the last statement or invoice provided to the consumer by the creditor.
    • The charge-off date.
    • The date of the last payment applied to the debt.
    • The date of the transaction that gave rise to the debt.
    • The judgment date, if there is court judgment on the debt.

This date will help you establish whether the Statute of Limitations on the debt has expired and when it will drop off your credit report.

The Notice of Debt must also contain extensive information about the debt:

    • The debt collectors name and mailing address.
    • The consumers full name and mailing address.
    • If the debt is related to a financial product , the notice must contain the name of the creditor to whom the debt was owed on the itemization date.
    • The account number associated with the debt.
    • The name of the creditor to which the debt is currently owed.
    • The amount of the current debt and an itemized list of any payments made and added fees, interest, or other charges.
    • This is not my debt.
    • The amount is wrong.

    A Warning About Imposter Websites

Only one website is authorized to fill orders for the free annual credit report you are entitled to under law annualcreditreport.com. Other websites that claim to offer free credit reports, free credit scores, or free credit monitoring are not part of the legally mandated free annual credit report program. In some cases, the free product comes with strings attached. For example, some sites sign you up for a supposedly free service that converts to one you have to pay for after a trial period. If you dont cancel during the trial period, you may be unwittingly agreeing to let the company start charging fees to your credit card.

Some imposter sites use terms like free report in their names others have URLs that purposely misspell annualcreditreport.com in the hope that you will mistype the name of the official site. Some of these imposter sites direct you to other sites that try to sell you something or collect your personal information.

Annualcreditreport.com and the nationwide consumer reporting companies will not send you an email asking for your personal information. If you get an email, see a pop-up ad, or get a phone call from someone claiming to be from annualcreditreport.com or any of the three nationwide consumer reporting companies, do not reply or click on any link in the message. Its probably a scam. Forward any such email to the FTC at .

Why Should I Get A Copy Of My Report

Getting your credit report can help protect your credit history from mistakes, errors, or signs of identity theft.

Check to be sure the information is accurate, complete, and up-to-date. Consider doing this at least once a year. Be sure to check before you apply for credit, a loan, insurance, or a job. If you find mistakes on your credit report, contact the credit bureaus and the business that supplied the information to get the mistakes removed from your report.

Check to help spot identity theft. Mistakes on your credit report might be a sign of identity theft. Once identity thieves steal your personal information information like, your name, date of birth, address, credit card or bank account, Social Security, or medical insurance account numbers they can drain your bank account, run up charges on your credit cards, get new credit cards in your name, open a phone, cable, or other utility account in your name, steal your tax refund, use your health insurance to get medical care, or pretend to be you if they are arrested.

Identity theft can damage your credit with unpaid bills and past due accounts. If you think someone might be misusing your personal information, go to IdentityTheft.gov to report it and get a personalized recovery plan.
