The Negative: Reporting Late Payments
If you do rental payment reporting and a tenant pays late or doesnt pay at all, this information will make it onto their credit report in various ways. You might get upset that a tenant keeps paying late and want to report a tenant to the credit bureau.
Most tenants will not want this to happen, so the knowledge that you report to credit bureaus monthly can help to keep tenants focused on making their payments on time. You may want to remind tenants that consistently paying late in the ways of this can affect them.
Even if late payments may not actually lower their credit score, every late payment issue will show up in the full report. If they plan to rent again in the future, this could be a problem for them. Ensuring that they know this can help encourage tenants to be more reliable while also protecting you and their future landlords.
How Your Credit Report Works
Your is primarily a record of your payment history on your various credit accounts. These accounts include , car loans, mortgages, student loans and similar debts. Credit reports also include reports on things like bankruptcies and tax liens, and can even include rent or bill payments.
Essentially, your credit report encompasses everything reported to the consumer credit reporting agencies, from payments made to requests for new credit. The three principal credit reporting agencies are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.
The information in your credit report is used to come up with your credit score. Without a credit history, theres no credit score. However, your creditors arent required to report your payment history to every credit reporting agency. Thats why a credit score can vary depending on which credit reporting agency provides the score.

Does Paying Rent Build Credit
Simply paying your rent will not help you build credit. But reporting your rent payments can help you build credit especially if you are new to credit or do not have a lot of experience using it.
A 2017 TransUnion study followed 12,000 renters for a year as they reported their rent payments. Scores rose 16 points on average within six months after rent reporting began, according to the study. The largest increase was for scores below 620, which is considered bad credit.
Having rental payment information in your credit report can be useful if you rent again. Landlords prefer tenants who can show a history of paying on time.
But other strategies to build credit are more efficient than rent reporting because they influence all types of credit scores and usually report to all three credit bureaus. They also can cost less or, in the case of authorized usership, nothing.

Do My Monthly Bill Payments Affect My Credit Score
Q:;Does making my monthly bill payments count toward my credit score?;
A:;Unless youre delinquent on monthly bills like utility payments, they will not affect your credit score. However, there is a way out. Here are four steps you can take to make on-time monthly payments and boost your credit score.;
1. Use a Rent-reporting Service;
Your monthly rent payments can reflect positively on your credit score, but only if the credit bureaus know youre paying your monthly rent on time. They wont accept this information from consumers, but you can use a rent-reporting service, likeRent Reporters, which will pass on this information to one, two or all of the three major credit bureaus each month, usually for a nominal fee.;
2. Sign up forExperian Boost
The Experian credit bureau recently started offering consumers the opportunity to have some of their utility bills reflected within their Experian credit scores. To sign up for the service, Experian requires access to your checking account information so the agency can identify your bill payments. Experian will then ask you to verify details and to confirm that you want this information included in your credit report. After your consent is received, your credit score boost will happen immediately. However, if you neglect to pay any reported bills for three consecutive months, the change in score will reverse itself.;
Its also important to note that Experian Boost does not affect your Equifax or TransUnion scores.;
What To Do If Payments Are Inaccurately Reported
If you have reviewed your Experian credit report and believe there is information being reported inaccurately, there are two steps you should take:
- Speak to the lender that is reporting the information. Contact your lender to notify them that you believe they are reporting information incorrectly. If they agree with you, they can contact Experian to correct the information.
- Contact Experian to submit a dispute. The quickest way to dispute information on your Experian credit report is online via Experian’s Dispute Center. Experian will contact the lender on your behalf and notify them of your dispute. The dispute process can take up to 30 days, and you will be notified when the results are ready.
Thanks for asking.
Utilize An Alternative Credit Bureau
Some companies allow consumers to self-report data, including loans, rental payments and phone bills. You will need to provide proof of the mortgage payments, such as copies of the returned checks and contract. Although creditors are more likely to rely on your scores from the major bureaus, some might consider an alternative score if you do not have traditional credit. Payment Reporting Builds Credit is an alternative credit bureau that offers the service free of charge to consumers.
When To Contact The Credit Bureaus
After youve contacted your creditor, youll want to confirm that each of the three major credit bureaus has changed the information. Wait a couple of weeks, and then check your report if you still see errors, send a letter to the credit bureau asking them to correct the information.
Once you send a request to each of the three credit bureaus, they are required to open an investigation and resolve the matter within 30 days. This process is especially helpful if one of your creditors is hard to reach or unresponsive.
