Minding Your P’s & Qs

You are entitled by law to a free credit report from each of the three credit bureaus once a year. This means you can monitor and compare your credit reports annually or request a report at least three times a year. Visit each credit bureau’s website to request a report or visit the USA.gov site. Make note of any inaccurate information, and dispute it with either the credit bureau or the creditor listing the erroneous information.

Data maintained by Experian, TransUnion and Equifax is used to calculate credit scores. Credit bureaus gather information about your credit accounts, including credit cards, loans and lines of credit. They record your payment history, balances, available credit, late payments, accounts in collections and bankruptcies.

Credit reports also include identifying information such as your name, Social Security Number, current and former addresses, and current and past employers that have been reported to the bureaus by the creditors. They dont include financial information unrelated to debt, such as your income or bank account balance. In the case of Experian, to help protect you from identity theft, they do not list your actual SSN on your personal credit report.

Will Chexsystems Data Affect Your Ability To Open An Account

Pulling ChexSystems data doesn’t pose a threat to most consumers. Unlike the scads of information collected by the , ChexSystems mainly reports on larger issues: uncollected overdraft fees, number of accounts, repeated overdraft fees, or fraud. Many banks allow customers to write statements explaining smaller issues, like racking up overdraft fees during a period of unemployment.

Some consumers enjoy hopping from one bank to the next to acquire “freebies.” This can cost account jumpers in the long term if banks see a pattern of behavior and refuse to open accounts.

A bank can deny customers the opportunity to open an account with them if the data given by ChexSystems shows a pattern of risky or fraudulent behavior. Make sure to check the free report annually to scan for any potential errors. You can correct errors on your ChexSystems report by filing a dispute with ChexSystems. It usually completes investigations within 30 days.

You can add a statement of up to 100 words to your ChexSystems file to explain negative information. You might want to consider this option if you have negative information due to unemployment, medical bills, or other life events.

Escalate The Issue If Required

If you feel that a credit bureau has not treated you properly, you may file a complaint. This complaint can be made in writing to your provincial or territorial consumer affairs office. The federal government does not regulate credit bureaus.

In Quebec, these complaints must be directed to the Commission d’accès à l’information du Québec .

Fixing Errors In A Credit Report

Anyone who denies you credit, housing, insurance, or a job because of a credit report must give you the name, address, and telephone number of the credit reporting agency that provided the report. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act , you have the right to request a free report within 60 days if a company denies you credit based on the report.

You can get your credit report fixed if it contains inaccurate or incomplete information:

  • Contact both the credit reporting agency and the company that provided the information to the CRA.
  • Tell the CRA, in writing, what information you believe is inaccurate. Keep a copy of all correspondence.

Some companies may promise to repair or fix your credit for an upfront fee–but there is no way to remove negative information in your credit report if it is accurate.

Contact Your Mortgage Lender And Ask If They Report To Experian

If your mortgage account does not appear on your credit report, the first thing you should do is contact your mortgage company and ask them if they report to Experian. If your lender confirms that they do report to Experian, you can request that they contact their Experian representative for help in determining why the account is not appearing in your report. Ask them to review the identifying information on the account to ensure that the account is being reported under the correct name and Social Security number.

You also can contact Experian and explain the situation so that it can be researched. You can reach Experian by phone at 888-EXPERIAN, or by mail at:

Experian P.O. Box 9701 Allen, TX 75013

Simply explain that you have an account that’s not appearing on your report and that the lender has verified it is in fact being reported. Be sure to include your complete identification number, including your Social Security number, so that Experian can locate your credit information.

Unfortunately, if your lender does not report, you won’t be able to have your account added. When you apply for credit in the future, ask the lender if they report account history to one or more of the national credit reporting companies. If they don’t, you might consider applying elsewhere to ensure your positive account payments help you build a strong credit history.

Bank Accounts Are Indirectly Tied To Your Credit

Just because the credit report doesn’t affect your checking account, however, doesn’t mean the reverse isn’t true. Lenders will require a checking account when applying for a loan or line of credit. Often, spending habits and account balances are monitored to ensure a pattern of responsible behavior. A client in the market for a mortgage, for example, might throw up a red flag if thousands of dollars of shoe purchases or charges from Best Buy appear on a bank statement right before closing.

Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, but avoiding overdraft fees and maintaining solid banking habits can pay off in the long run. Bank accounts can impact your credit, so budgeting now could save you thousands in interest down the road. If you do get into an overdraft situation, work with the bank to resolve it as quickly as possible. Keep another account connected to your checking account or consider opening a line of credit with your bank that can be used for overdraft protection.

How Often Do Banks Report Late Payments To Credit Bureaus

Aznsilvrboy wrote: I have a BMO MasterCard from my student days. It is one of my oldest credit cards. I stopped using it a long time ago due to better rewards on other cards that I got. Today I received a statement from BMO saying I owe a small balance. So I log into BMO online banking to check and it turns out that I was charged an inactivity fee in July, plus small amounts of interest leading up to now . I called BMO and managed to get the balance waived, and checked my Equifax credit report and it still says no late payments.I’m not really complaining about it but I’m just curious when do banks report late payments to the credit bureaus?

They won’t report anything unless it’s late 30days or more. If you ever pull your credit, you will see sections of 30/60/90/120/150/180days late. Nothing less than 30days late is reported.

What Types Of Payments Can I Report To Credit Bureaus

Although you cannot self-report traditional credit account information to the credit reporting companies, there are types of payments you can request to have added to your Experian credit history:

  • Rental payments: If you rent a home or apartment, your landlord or property management company can report your on-time rental payments to your Experian credit report through Experian RentBureau. You can also choose to enroll in a third-party rent payment service that will report your payments at your request. Adding this payment information can instantly boost your Experian credit score.

What Is A Credit Pull

A credit pull or inquiry is a request by a retailer, financial institution or any other individual to view your credit report. Third parties can pull your credit report to review your creditworthiness and other details before extending credit. There are two types of credit pulls, hard inquiries and soft inquiries. Only you can see your soft inquiries, but hard inquiries are visible to anyone who looks at your report.

Anytime a potential lender looks at your credit report, a hard credit inquiry occurs. An example of a hard inquiry is when you apply for a mortgage and the lender pulls your credit report to determine your worthiness for extension of credit.

On the other hand, a soft inquiry occurs when a routine check is performed on your report without your permission. Soft inquiries happen when a creditor youre currently working with checks your credit to ensure youre still creditworthy or when you check your report yourself.

How A Credit Score Is Determined

Your personal credit score is generated by a mathematical formula using information in your credit report. Credit scoring was first developed in 1958 by Fair Isaac Corporation to help predict whether a borrower will repay their loan on time. The resulting score is commonly called a FICO score, after Fair Isaac. Higher scores are better than lower scores.

When a credit bureau calculates your score, they do not take race, religion, age, sex or marital status into account. Neither does your income, occupation or employment history figure into the score, nor if you’ve been turned down for credit.

Check Your Credit Report For Fraud

Look for accounts that don’t belong to you on your credit report. Accounts that you don’t recognize could mean that someone has applied for a credit card, line of credit, mortgage or other loan under your name. It could also just be an administrative error. Make sure it’s not fraud or identity theft by taking the steps to have it corrected.

If you find an error on your credit report, contact lenders and any other organizations that could be affected. Tell them about the potential fraud.

Why Is It Important To Know When Credit Companies Report

Some confusion can be cleared up by knowing when credit-card companies report to the CRAs. Its usually at your statement closing date.

Dont be alarmed if you check your credit report and see a balance when you know your card is paid off in full each month. At the end of your billing cycle, theres a great fluctuation, sometimes causing as much as a 30% shift in the credit score for most consumers. But when the payment is accounted for, it shifts back into form.

Billing cycles can vary. Some credit-card companies might do it at mid-month and others at the end of the month.

Credit-card companies probably are providing a snapshot of your current balance when they report to the CRAs. If this is a concern, keep track of your spending by your statement closing date. Making a payment before your statement closing date will keep the balance lower when its reported, helping your overall credit.

This also helps your credit utilization rate, an important factor when it comes to your credit score. Your credit utilization rate is your total credit-card balance divided by your total credit-card limit. Experts advise consumers to keep that ratio under 30%. Paying down your revolving debt and carrying a lower balance is a possible way to help your credit score, although it is influenced by several factors.

The bottom line is if you pay your bills on time and you keep a low credit-card balance, your credit score will take care of itself.
