Credit Score: Is It Good Or Bad

Hot tip to raise Your credit Score 25 50 points in the next 30 days

A FICO® Score of 727 falls within a span of scores, from 670 to 739, that are categorized as Good. The average U.S. FICO® Score, 714, falls within the Good range. A large number of U.S. lenders consider consumers with Good FICO® Scores “acceptable” borrowers, which means they consider you eligible for a broad variety of credit products, although they may not charge you the lowest-available interest rates or extend you their most selective product offers.

21% of U.S. consumers’ FICO® Scores are in the Good range.

Approximately 9% of consumers with Good FICO® Scores are likely to become seriously delinquent in the future.

What’s So Good About A Good Credit Score

A credit score in the good range may reflect a relatively short credit history marked by good credit management. It may also characterize a longer credit history with a few mistakes along the way, such as occasional late or missed payments, or a tendency toward relatively high credit usage rates.

Late payments appear in the credit reports of 27% of people with FICO® Scores of 727.

Lenders see people with scores like yours as solid business prospects. Most lenders are willing to extend credit to borrowers with credit scores in the good range, although they may not offer their very best interest rates, and card issuers may not offer you their most compelling rewards and loyalty bonuses.

Why There Are Different Credit Scores

For example, VantageScore creates a tri-bureau scoring model, meaning the same model can evaluate your credit report from any of the three major consumer credit bureaus . The first version was built in 2006. The latest version, VantageScore 4.0, was released in 2017 and developed based on data from 2014 to 2016. It was the first generic credit score to incorporate trended datain other words, how consumers manage their accounts over time.

FICO® is an older company, and it was one of the first to create credit scoring models based on consumer credit reports. It creates different versions of its scoring models to be used with each credit bureau’s data, although recent versions share a common name, such as FICO® Score 8. There are two commonly used types of consumer FICO® Scores:

  • Base FICO® Scores: These scores are created for any type of lender to use, as they aim to predict the likelihood that a consumer will fall behind on any type of credit obligation. Base FICO® Scores range from 300 to 850.
  • Industry-specific FICO® Scores: FICO® creates auto scores and bankcard scores specifically for auto lenders and card issuers. Industry scores aim to predict the likelihood that a consumer will fall behind on the specific type of account, and the scores range from 250 to 900.

What Counts Towards Your 727 Credit Score

  • 13 Negotiating with Your Creditors
  • In essence, your credit score tells you whether YOU have a responsible credit management and a history showing that you have been financially stable. So what factors contribute to showing that you are fiscally responsible and stable?

The first and most critical factor will be your overall payment history. This is simply whether you have paid all of your bills on time. There are also a variety of aspects of your payment history that your credit rating will include, including how late you were on your payments , how many bills you paid and how many you did not, if any of your accounts have gone into collections and if you have a history of foreclosures, bankruptcies, and debt settlements.

The second biggest factor that counts towards your credit score is the total amount of money that you owe. Again, there is a variety of aspects of this that goes into your 727 credit score. One such example is the amount of your allotted credit that you have used up. Heres a piece of advice: the less you owe on the credit, the better your credit score will be.

Another aspect of your amounts owed is how much money you owe on each of your loans, including your credit cards, your car payments, and your mortgage payment. The best way to have a positive credit rating here is to have a variety of credits and loans and to manage each of them in a very responsible manner.

The Three Credit Reporting Agencies And Different Types Of Credit Scores

What rating does a credit score of 631 yield?

Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion are three major credit reporting bureaus. Each credit agency provides you with a credit score, and these three scores combine to create both your 727 FICO Credit Score and your VantageScore. Your score will differ slightly among each agency for many reasons, including their unique scoring models and how often they access your financial data. Monitoring of all five of these credit scores on a regular basis is the best way to ensure that your credit score is an accurate reflection of your financial situation.

Getting your credit score to 700 is kind of like making the honor roll in school. You need mainly As and Bs to pull it off.

For example, heres a common credit scorecard for someone with a 750 credit score:

    • Payment History: A = 100% on-time payments
    • Debt Load: A = < 0.28 debt-to-income ratio
    • Account Age: B = Average account is less than 9 years old

What Interest Rate Can I Get With My Credit Score

The Power of Relationship Banking and Why Your Credit Score doesn’t matter.

While a specific credit score doesnt guarantee a certain mortgage rate, credit scores have a fairly predictable overall effect on mortgage rates. First, lets assume that you meet the highest standards for all other criteria in your loan application. Youre putting down at least 20% of the home value, you have additional savings in case of an emergency and your income is at least three times your total payment. If all of that is true, heres how your interest rate might affect your credit score.

    • Excellent Your credit score will have no impact on your interest rate. You will likely be offered the lowest rate available.
    • Very good Your credit score may have a minimal impact on your interest rate. You could be offered interest rates 0.25% higher than the lowest available.
    • Good Your credit score may have a small impact on your interest rate. This means rates up to .5% higher than the lowest available are possible.
    • Moderate Your credit score will affect your interest rate. Be prepared for rates up to 1.5% higher than the lowest available.
    • Poor Your credit score is going to seriously affect your interest rates. You may be hit with rates 2-4% higher than the lowest available.
    • Very Poor This is trouble. If you are offered a mortgage, youll be paying some very high rates.

What Is A Good Credit Score For An Auto Loan

Next to a mortgage, vehicles are often among the most expensive purchases the average adult makes in the United States. According to the Kelley Blue Book, an independent automotive valuation agency, the average price for a light vehicle purchase in the U.S. was $38,940 in May of 2020.

For a significant purchase like a car, having good credit could mean saving thousands when youre financing your purchase.

For example, someone with a FICO score of 620 who is looking to buy a new car is told by the car dealer they could qualify for a 60-month loan for $38,000.

According to the FICO Loan Savings Calculator, your loan in June 2020 would have an APR of 16.714% and your monthly payments would be $939. Over the life of the loan, youd pay an additional $18,315 in interest.

A $942 per month car loan payment is a significant amount, even if you can get approved. So, lets assume you hit the pause button and decide to work on improving your credit before taking out a loan. When you apply again down the line, you learn that youve boosted your score to a 670, which is considered a good credit score by most credit scoring models.

With a 670 credit score, the FICO Loan Calculator now estimates that you might qualify for an APR around 7.89%. Based on that rate, your monthly payment on the same $38,000 auto loan would be $768. You would pay $8,106 in total interest over the life of your loan.

Have the creditor provide written confirmation of the error, then ask them to report the corrected information to all three credit bureaus.

Wait 30 days and pull your credit again. If the error still appears, write a letter to each of the three credit bureaus , and include a copy of the creditors letter acknowledging the error. Based on that letter, the credit bureaus can remove the error and fix your credit report.

    Length Of Credit History

In general, the longer you’ve been using credit and the longer your average age of accounts, the better it is for your score. This is because credit scores are meant to estimate your risk as a customer, and a long history gives creditors more data to estimate with.If you don’t have a pressing reason to do so, like a high annual fee, avoid closing credit cards. You can also look into doing a product switch to a more suitable card from the same issuer. Your credit score is comprised of five factors: payment history, amounts owed, length of credit history, new credit, and credit mix.

    • Different lenders have different criteria when it comes to granting credit

Its an age-old question we receive, and to answer it requires that we start with the basics: What is a credit score, anyway?

Generally speaking, a credit score is a three-digit number ranging from 300 to 850. Credit scores are calculated using information in your credit report, including your payment history the amount of debt you have and the length of your credit history.

There are many different scoring models, and some use other data in calculating credit scores. Credit scores are used by potential lenders and creditors, such as banks, credit card companies or car dealerships, as one factor when deciding whether to offer you credit, like a loan or credit card. Its one factor among many to help them determine how likely you are to pay back money they lend.

It’s important to remember that everyone’s financial and credit situation is different, and there’s no “magic number” that may guarantee better loan rates and terms.

Although ranges vary depending on the credit scoring model, generally credit scores from 580 to 669 are considered fair 670 to 739 are considered good 740 to 799 are considered very good and 800 and up are considered excellent. Higher credit scores mean you have demonstrated responsible credit behavior in the past, which may make potential lenders and creditors more confident when evaluating a request for credit.
