What Affects Your Credit Scores

What is a Good Credit Score in Canada?

Common factors can affect all your credit scores, and these are often split into five categories:

  • Payment history: Making on-time payments on your credit accounts can help your scores. But missing payments, having an account sent to collections or filing bankruptcy could hurt your scores.
  • : How many of your accounts have balances, how much you owe and the portion of your credit limit that you’re using on revolving accounts all come into play here.
  • Length of credit history: This category includes the average age of all your credit accounts, along with the age of your oldest and newest accounts.
  • Types of accounts: Also called “credit mix,” this considers whether you’re managing both installment accounts and revolving accounts . Showing that you can manage both types of accounts responsibly generally helps your scores.
  • Recent activity: This considers whether you’ve recently applied for or opened new accounts.

FICO® and VantageScore take different approaches to explaining the relative importance of the categories.

The Mark Of Higher Balances

The amount a borrower owes is a major determinant of ones credit score, second only to making on-time payments. So, it isnt surprising that borrowers signed up for LendingTree with a 666 score have higher balances than the overall population for all types of debt.

In particular, their credit card balances are much higher. Their average balance of $10,298 exceeds the average credit card balance of $6,479, based on an anonymized sample taken in October 2019. They also have higher balances on auto, student and personal loans.

Why There Are Different Credit Scores

For example, VantageScore creates a tri-bureau scoring model, meaning the same model can evaluate your credit report from any of the three major consumer credit bureaus . The first version was built in 2006. The latest version, VantageScore 4.0, was released in 2017 and developed based on data from 2014 to 2016. It was the first generic credit score to incorporate trended datain other words, how consumers manage their accounts over time.

FICO® is an older company, and it was one of the first to create credit scoring models based on consumer credit reports. It creates different versions of its scoring models to be used with each credit bureau’s data, although recent versions share a common name, such as FICO® Score 8. There are two commonly used types of consumer FICO® Scores:

  • Base FICO® Scores: These scores are created for any type of lender to use, as they aim to predict the likelihood that a consumer will fall behind on any type of credit obligation. Base FICO® Scores range from 300 to 850.
  • Industry-specific FICO® Scores: FICO® creates auto scores and bankcard scores specifically for auto lenders and card issuers. Industry scores aim to predict the likelihood that a consumer will fall behind on the specific type of account, and the scores range from 250 to 900.

Apply For Credit Rebuilding Products

Apply for secured credit cards or personal loans that offer better pathways to rebuild credit. How do they work? For a secured credit card, you need to make a deposit. The amount serves as your credit limit, meaning that the lender does not risk their money.

When you receive the monthly bill statement, you pay down the balance, and the lender submits the account activity in their filing to the bureaus. Gradually, you add positive information and establish your creditworthiness.

  • Theres no magic number to reach when it comes to receiving better loan rates and terms

Its an age-old question we get, and to answer it requires that we start with the basics: What is a, anyway?

A credit score is a number, generally between 300 and 900, that helps determine your creditworthiness. Credit scores are calculated using information in your , including your payment history the amount of debt you have and the length of your credit history.

Its also important to remember that everyones financial and credit situation is different, and theres no magic number to reach when it comes to receiving better loan rates and terms.

There are many different credit score models used today by lenders and other organizations. These scores all have the same goal: to predict a consumers likelihood to pay their bills. There are some differences around how the various data elements on a credit report factor into the score calculations.

Have At Least Three Credit Cards But Only Use One

This first step comes completely from my own experience after experimenting with different techniques.

To optimize your credit score, it works best to have no more and no less than three major credit cards.

These cards should have long, good payment histories, and low credit utilization .

Its best to use only one of these cards on a regular basis and simply keep the other two cards with a $0 balance.

Its not that you cant ever use the other two cards, but generally, I like to keep their balances at zero. This technique will maximize your credit score.

What Does A 665 Credit Score Get You

Credit Score Scale – What is a Good Credit Score?

As you can see, most people who are at least 35 years old have a credit score of 650 or higher. And even younger folks nearly have a majority. This just goes to show that people with 650 credit scores come in all shapes and sizes, with diverse backgrounds and differing financial obligations.

As a result, the grades for each component of your credit score, which you can find on the Credit Analysis page of your free WalletHub account, might not exactly match those of another individual with a 650 score. But the sample scorecard below will give you a pretty good idea of what a 650 score is made of.Sample Scorecard 665 Credit Score:

  • Payment History: C = 98% on-time payments
  • B = 10% – 29% utilization
  • Debt Load: A = Debt-to-income ratio below 0.28
  • Account Age: B = Average tradeline is 7 or 8 years old
  • Account Diversity: C = 2 account types or 5 – 9 total accounts
  • Hard Credit Inquiries: A = Fewer than 3 in past 24 months
  • Collections Accounts & Public Records: A = 0 collections accounts and public records

These are by no means the only credit-score grades capable of producing a score of 650, nor will they necessarily result in that exact rating. However, this is representative of the type of scorecard someone with a 665 credit score can expect: plenty As and Bs, but no failing grades to be found.

Check Your Credit Reports And Dispute Any Inaccuracies

A good start to building good credit is checking your credit reports. It seems simple, but regularly reviewing your reports can help you identify any errors that could be negatively affecting your credit. Checking your reports often can also help you spot signs of identity theft before they wreak havoc on your credit.

If you do find errors or suspicious discrepancies on your reports, disputing them could help you get them removed and ultimately improve your scores.

Credit Score: Is It Good Or Bad

A FICO® Score of 665 places you within a population of consumers whose credit may be seen as Fair. Your 665 FICO® Score is lower than the average U.S. credit score.

17% of all consumers have FICO® Scores in the Fair range

.

Statistically speaking, 28% of consumers with credit scores in the Fair range are likely to become seriously delinquent in the future.

Some lenders dislike those odds and choose not to work with individuals whose FICO® Scores fall within this range. Lenders focused on “subprime” borrowers, on the other hand, may seek out consumers with scores in the Fair range, but they typically charge high fees and steep interest rates. Consumers with FICO® Scores in the good range or higher are generally offered significantly better borrowing terms.

You Need A Mortgage Loan

You definitely dont need a mortgage loan to have good credit. However, if you want to max out your credit score, having a mortgage loan with good payment history is a must.

Since a mortgage loan is usually a relatively large loan and more difficult to get than other installment loans such as an auto loan, a mortgage shows creditors you have been responsible enough with your credit to get the mortgage in the first place.

Fair Isaac Corporation, which provides the FICO score, recommends you have a mix of different types of credit accounts. So along with credit cards and installment loans, a mortgage loan is the last piece of the pie to round off your credit mix.

I also want to note I didnt start seeing my credit score go up because of the mortgage loan until about a year later, so it definitely takes some time.

You obviously shouldnt take out a mortgage loan just to get a perfect credit score. But a mortgage loan is normally considered to be good debt, in that interest rates are relatively low and youre financing something that usually appreciates in value.

If you dont already have a mortgage, be sure to fix up your credit report before applying for a mortgage assuming youre ready for homeownership.

What Is The Average Credit Score In Canada

While credit scores in Canada range from 300 – 900, the average is around 650, according to TransUnion, though it varies from province to province. Once you’ve reached a credit score of 650 or higher, you’ll be able to qualify for more financial products. A credit score below 650 is going to make it hard to qualify for new credit, and anything you are approved for will likely come with very high-interest rates.

Heres How To Improve A 667 Credit Score:

What is a good credit score?
  • Dispute Negatives: If you can prove that negative information on your credit report is inaccurate , you can dispute the record to have it corrected or removed.
  • Pay Off Collections Accounts: Once you bring a collection accounts balance down to zero, it stops affecting your VantageScore 3.0 credit score.
  • Reduce Utilization: Its best to use less than 30% of the available credit on your credit card accounts each month. You can reduce your credit utilization by spending less, making bigger payments or paying multiple times per month.
  • Pay On Time: Payment history is the most important ingredient in your credit score. Paying on time every month establishes a track record of responsibility as a borrower, while a single late payment on your credit report can set back credit improvement efforts significantly.

In essence, your credit score tells you whether you have a responsible credit management and a history showing that you have been financially stable. So what factors contribute to showing that you are fiscally responsible and stable?

The first and most critical factor will be your overall payment history. This is simply whether you have paid all of your bills on time. There are also a variety of aspects of your payment history that your credit rating will include, including how late you were on your payments , how many bills you paid and how many you did not, if any of your accounts have gone into collections and if you have a history of foreclosures, bankruptcies, and debt settlements.

The second biggest factor that counts towards your credit score is the total amount of money that you owe. Again, there is a variety of aspects of this that goes into your 665 credit score. One such example is the amount of your allotted credit that you have used up. Heres a piece of advice: the less you owe on the credit, the better your credit score will be.

Another aspect of your amounts owed is how much money you owe on each of your loans, including your credit cards, your car payments, and your mortgage payment. The best way to have a positive credit rating here is to have a variety of credits and loans and to manage each of them in a very responsible manner.
