Is Your Credit Report Accurate

What Is a Fraud Alert? | Experian Credit 101 Express

The information in your credit report can affect your buying power and your chance to get a job, rent or buy a place to live, and buy insurance. Credit bureaus sell the information in your report to businesses that use it to decide whether to loan you money, give you credit, offer you insurance, or rent you a home. Some employers use credit reports in hiring decisions. The strength of your credit history also affects how much you will have to pay to borrow money. Youll want to be sure the information in your report is both accurate and complete. Find out by regularly checking your credit report. You have the right to get free copies of your credit report from each of the three major credit bureaus once every 12 months. To get your free credit reports, go to AnnualCreditReport.com.

Through December 2022, everyone in the U.S. can get a free credit report each week from Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion at AnnualCreditReport.com. Also, anyone in the U.S. can get 6 free credit reports per year through 2026 by visiting the Equifax website or by calling 1-866-349-5191. Thats in addition to the one free Equifax report you can get at AnnualCreditReport.com.

How Do I Place A Fraud Alert

Fraud alerts are available through all three national credit bureaus . Placing a fraud alert at any one of the bureaus automatically triggers alerts at all three.

When you request a fraud alert, you must provide a copy of a state-issued ID card and a piece of mail, such as a utility or insurance bill, as proof of address. At the Experian Fraud Alert Center, you have the option to upload those items as electronic documents or to submit them by mail.

To place a fraud alert at the Experian Fraud Alert Center, visit the webpage, select the type of alert you want, and follow the instructions on how to upload or mail in copies of your ID, proof of address and any other required documentation.

If you want to remove a fraud alert from your credit reports before they expire naturally, you must contact all three credit bureaus separately. Follow each bureau’s instructions for removing a fraud alert, as procedures may differ by bureau.

What Happens During A Ban Period

During the ban period, a credit reporting body mustnt use or disclose your consumer credit report . Except:

  • if you have consented, in writing, to the use or disclosure, or
  • Australian law or a court or tribunal order require the credit reporting body to use it

If a credit provider asks a credit reporting body for a copy of your consumer credit report during the ban period, the credit reporting body will tell them about the ban. This will alert the credit provider to the potential fraud.

While a ban period is in place it may be more difficult for you to apply for credit. For example, a credit provider may need to collect more personal information directly from you.

How To Place A Fraud Alert

Placing a fraud alert on your credit report only takes a few minutes, and if you have any concerns that your credit accounts or personal identifying information have been compromised, it’ll be time well spent.

A fraud alert is a notification that appears in your credit file instructing lenders to take extra steps to verify your identity before processing credit card or loan applications. Its purpose is to prevent identity thieves and other criminals from securing loans or opening credit accounts in your name.

There are three types of fraud alerts:

  • A temporary fraud alert, sometimes called an initial fraud alert, stays on your credit report for one year and then expires. Anyone can add one to their credit report anytime, for any reason. It can be renewed as many times as desired and, like all fraud alerts, can be cancelled anytime upon request.
  • An active-duty fraud alert protects active-duty service members on assignment away from home. It lasts one year unless the service member removes it.
  • An extended fraud victim alert stays on your credit reports for seven years unless you decide to remove it sooner. If you know you’ve been a victim of credit fraud or identity theft and have reported the crime to authorities, you can obtain one by submitting a copy of the identity theft report you filed with law enforcement.

Do You Have To Report Identity Theft To Credit Bureaus

No, you dont have to report identity theft to credit bureaus if you dont want to but if you know that theres been fraud involving your personal info, reporting that fraud to Equifax, Experian and TransUnion can limit further fraudulent activity.

You have two options: initiating a fraud alert or a .

A fraud alert forces creditors to verify your identity before opening credit, while a cuts off access to your credit score and credit reports until you. In other words, with a credit freeze, its unlikely for new credit accounts to be opened by you or someone else in your name because the three major credit bureaus block access to your data which is needed for most credit accounts to be created from car dealerships to credit card companies and everyone in between.

Is starting a credit freeze a big step? Yes. But if youve been a victim of identity theft, its a better, safer option than a fraud alert. FYI, a credit freeze doesnt protect you from identity-related matters that dont require a credit check. For example, someone may still be able to get medical care in your name or attempt to file a fraudulent tax return using your information.

The good news is that a credit freeze wont affect your credit score and, like a fraud alert, its a free service.

Lenders And Debt Collectors Should Also Comply

Lenders should also take adequate steps once they hear from a credit bureau about misreported accounts, in order to block the information from being provided again. In addition, if you directly contact the lender and provide an identity theft report about the illegal account, the lender should take notice and stop reporting the account to credit bureaus unless it knows otherwise.

Not only that, but lenders cannot place debts into collection if theyve been notified that those debts resulted from identity theft. If a debt collector contacts you about such accounts, you should also notify them about the identity theft and ask them to report the matter to lenders theyre representing.

Each of the three credit bureaus has an online webpage dedicated to helping victims of identity theft.

When you visit the agencies websites, each allows you to fill out forms online. You can choose to place a 90-day fraud alert or seven-year fraud alert. Again, the extended fraud alert requires that you submit a police report, indicating youre an identity theft victim.

    What Is A Credit Freeze

Sample identity theft dispute letter to credit bureau

When you freeze your credit, your credit-report file is locked. This makes it impossible for lenders and identity fraudsters to open the account or inquire about your credit history until you remove the freeze. Freezing your credit file therefore provides you with protection against the kind of fraud often perpetrated by identity thieves. It also prevents unauthorized access to your personal data.

If you freeze your credit file after your personal data has already been compromised, the freeze can only help you to prevent future breaches of the file. It cant help you fix the breach that has already occurred. A scammer who is already privy to your account number and other personal data can still use your card to make purchases. Even worse, the scammer can sell the stolen information to other bad guys online.

To avoid such breaches, make sure that your personal data is always secure so that when you eventually can obtain a credit card freeze, it will be useful. To be as safe as possible , it is imperative that you protect all your personal data from theft as thoroughly as you can.
