Filing A Police Report For Fraud

After reporting the matter to the FTC, call your local police and tell them youd like to file a fraud report. Ask them if its possible to do so in person at the station. If not, ask how you can file by phone or online and take notes on their instructions. If you go into the station to file, bring a copy of your FTC report and any supporting documentation, such as your bank statements or correspondence you may have received from the thief or companies the thief has dealt with. Fill out the forms given to you by the police and ask them to attach the copy of the FTC report to your police report.

Ask for a copy of your police report. Hold on to your report as proof of fraudulent activity on your accounts and credit report. If the police cannot offer you a copy of the police report, as is the case in some jurisdictions, have the officer sign your FTC complaint form and list the police report number in the Law Enforcement Report portion of the complaint form.

If your local police are unwilling to take a fraud report, try filling out a Miscellaneous Incident report. Then contact your states attorney general to see if your state requires local police to take fraud reports. Your states attorney general may also have a special task force to combat fraud, and his office may be able to refer you to another jurisdiction, such as the state police, to file your report. Types Of Credit Card And Debit Card Fraud

There are three terms often associated with credit card fraud, each with liabilities.

Card-Present Fraud occurs when a person is standing in front of you as you run the order. In this case, the card may be counterfeit or stolen, or the individual may verbally provide account details. In these situations, banks are typically liable, though you will still have to pay the standard transaction fee for that type of purchase.

Card-Not-Present Fraud occurs when a person provides credit card details over the phone or online. Card-not-present transactions are considered high-risk purchases of which you will be liable.

Friendly fraud is when a less-than-reputable customer makes the purchase but still disputes it as fraud. In this case, the customer will be liable.

Close Accounts That Have Been Tampered With

Immediately call and speak with someone in the security or fraud department of each company where a fraud has taken place and ask them what specific steps are required to begin the dispute/notification process. When you follow up with all of your compromised credit issuers in writing, include copies of all your supporting documents. Send your correspondence by certified mail, return receipt requested, so you can document what the company received and when. Make sure to keep a copy of all your correspondence and enclosures for future reference.

At your request, the Fraud Section of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will place a flag on your Florida driver’s license if you are a victim of identity theft . If you show your license to law enforcement or a Florida court, having a flag will require officers to ask for two or more pieces of identification. To reach the Fraud Section, call 617-2405.

Why Are Gas Prices So High

Oil is a traditionally volatile commodity since it trades on futures, not current prices. But high demand for crude oil and a limited supply pushed gas prices up to record levels this yearand the geopolitical situation exacerbated it.

During the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, demand for gasoline plunged as stay-at-home orders kept people from hitting the road. Oil producers responded to the demand slump by cutting back on productionbut once lockdowns were lifted, there was a massive surge in demand, and not enough oil to keep up with it.

There was also a flurry of pipeline issues last year that contributed to a lag in oil production, including a cyberattack on the Colonial Pipeline that shut it down for six days, as well as a spill at another pipeline later in the year.

The war in Ukraine compounded these supply and demand issues. Russia, which produces about 10% of the worlds oil supply, is being heavily sanctioned by Western countries in particular, the U.S. has completely banned Russian oil imports. Cutting off the portion of the global oil supply chain means a relatively significant portion of supply is now gone, and countries are struggling to find alternatives.

In an effort to boost supply, President Joe Biden authorized the largest release of oil from global reserves in history. An analysis from the Department of Treasury estimates that the releases, both domestically and internationally, have reduced gasoline prices by up to as much as 40 cents per gallon.
